Can some one tell me how to remove and replace the steering lock barrel?

I have a new lock assembly keyed to match the keyed ignition...

Cheers

I just did it on mine a few days ago. If you have the original key grind off the pin that holds the cover on with a die grinder. Insert key. Turn key in lock to the left. Pull key out. Slide in new tumber. Whalla done. I think. There may be a spring behind the tumbler that forces the unit out (if so i lost mine) ... You may want to take your triple clamp off to see if something tumbles out into your stering column. Since you are removing your triple clamp its a decent excuse to grease your top and bottom stering bearings.

On the topic. Can I buy your old tumber/key? How much to you want?

Thank you,

Michael

I'll give it to you for free when I get it out.

Any ideas on how to remount the swing cover once you dremel it off?

Yup. Grind the rest of the pin off flush after you have the swing off, hit it square center with a punch (get it as darn near center as you can) and then drill it out being careful to be a square as you can. DON'T DRILL ALL THE WAY INTO THE STEERING COLUMN. If you chose to not remove your triple clamp be very careful to not get metal shavings in your column/lock. I bought a brass pin from my local hardware store (and a drill bit that I had them take a caliper to and measure for me) that was just barely larger then the drill bit and smaller then the original "swing" hole. Hammer the pin in and whalla. Actually ... you send me that lock and I will send you the bit and a new pin if you like. I will just have to find the bit. I must have it .... somewhere.

O, I meant to ask what year/model was it off of?

Couple of questions and one answer....

First the answer - it is off a 06 FS650e

Q1: What keeps the lock barrel in place? the cover?

Q2: What about tapping a machine screw into the pin hole? If answer to #1 is the cover then this is poor idea...

Cheers

A1: The cover. (on mine at least 2002 FX650e) The lock barrel is also held in place by a pin on the backside of the lock chamber (look at the one you pulled out or the replacement you will see it right behind the rectangular part.) The barrel will not come out even if the cover were off unless you had the key in the chamber and rotated to the left... Eh ... I think. So the only part you run the risk of loosing is the cover... I think. Anyone else know for sure?

A2: Machine Screw.... might work... and might roll out (tip use lock tight!). You could get one that has a really short collar and place some rubber bushings on the outside to take up any slack. I went with a pin, made more sense to me and it is not comming out without a drill and die grinder. Brass pins are easy to get in (very soft) and easy to get out. You may be able to do the same thing with a pop rivit. I think that is all the original was... A steel rivit with splines on it.
