How to check valves? FC501

Hello,

I just attempted by first valve adjustment after taking a basic maintence course. On the 4 cyl street bike in the course, using a feeler gauge (aka thickness gauge) was no problem. But checking the valve clearance on my 98 FC501 is nearly impossible. The top of the valve cover is much higher than on the demo in the classroom and I'm looking for tips on how to accurately check the valve clearance.

Long story short, I put it all back together and I can hear by valves clacking now. I assume that's not good!

Hi Shawn and welcome to the site,

Have you checked our Frequently asked questions, more importantly the maintenance section?

Also, you can download the maintenance video in our downloads section, or the maintenance manual if you'd rather.

thanks,

fc501 valves

Hey, fitz, welcome aboard!!
Adjusting the valves on 'bergs relatively easy. For a bit more room, ya might want to take the radiator loose and swing it out of the way.
With cold motor, piston at TDC with all valves closed and rockers "wiggleable", It is just the normal loosen, insert feeler, snug 'til feeler just slides, lock and recheck with feeler. Both MotionPro and Porsche make feeler gauges with angled blades, and MotionPro makes a tool # 08-0073 for adjusting the valves.
There is also the 1/8th turn method - loosen locknut, snug adjuster 'til just contacting valve WITHOUT FEELER, then back off adjuster 1/8th turn, lock, and check with feeler if you wish. Both methods work, both methods used by members.
The first couple of times, GO SLOW and make sure everything is correct. After a few times, you should be able to do them in less than 1/2 hour, start to finish, bike back together and running.

Sweeeeet. Thanks Schwim

The faq site looks helpful.

I should have known it would be there...

How do you check the valves? Answer - very carefully as they are currently trading somewhere between uncut diamonds and gold bullion! 8O 8O

40 pounds sterling + vat EACH
