how much metal on the mag plug

I have just finished rebuilding my engine and have found small traces of metal on the mag plug after a 1 hour ride. I know it's normal to find some traces of metal in the oil after rebuilding an engine as parts have to seat themselves and what not, this is my first husaberg that I have rebuilt and I'm just trying to figure out when the metal should stop showing up on the mag plug or does it always show minute traces of metal. it's my first bike with a mag plug. sorry it's a 2005 fs650e.

you will get some after a rebuild, a better judge after 2 - 3 rides.

did you take a pic?

and with a magnet tip pen, put it in the drain hole and see if any metal shavings in there.

but go for a couple more rides n check each time.

How much of your engine did you rebuild?
I couldn't find the source of the flakes on my sump plug until i pressed the pin out of the crank.... glad I kept looking as I have heard of several people replacing mains, piston, liner etc only to destroy it all again as they did not check the big end bearing.
The ONLY way to truely check the condition of the big end is to dismantle it. 650's are hard on the big ends.

no I did'nt take any pics. it really is'nt much of a concern because there was'nt much metal on the plug. I'm assuming that every time I change the oil I will find trace of metal on the mag plug. as for the engine rebuild I replaced the piston, liner, conecting rod (with a new pin and bearing) and main bearings. a few other bearings in the cases.

I have always found a lot of metal on my 08 450 drain plug magnet every time.

And have never experienced anything like it on all my other bikes as they all had just a bit of finely ground metal on it. and this ******* has always had sharp peaces that you would not want to rub your fingers between :cuss: and a hell of a lot of fine metal

I have just had the motor rebuilt by orangeberg and there is as much metal on the plug as there was when the mains were destroyed. you could not possibly have any more metal sticking on it and it's the first oil change since at 110 KM 3 HR. :cuss: i nearly did a backwards somersault!

I love the bike but if i see that **** again in the next two oil changers i will get rid of the bike for sure

rosey,weed here man.
ya still having woes lad
i thought rosey should be all rosey by now
i will start on the easy one first,as why its shooting flames out the exhaust & running like $hit.
if it shoots flames out the exhaust, its running very lean.if its shooting flames out the exhaust constantly, the jetting is way off.if its doing it inconsisently/randomly its either the float or needle sticking shut, but my bet would be on $hit in the carb, either in the main, pilot or needle or in their passages.
have you got a fuel filter on it?
have you unscrewed the fcr's drain bung & had a look if there is any crap sitting in the bottom of that?
you only have to have the slightest bit of crap sitting in the bottom of that, & the main can suck it up & drop it,suck it up & drop it,if you know what i mean.
have you talked to john about how much metal is on the drain bung?
dunno, sounds a bit suss to me.shouldn't be that much.
what did it do last time? did it stuff the bore?
what you don't want to do, is stuff the chrome bore, piston & rings.very expensive as you will know.
i am REAL suss on the bearings in these things, either moving in the cases or moving on the crank.
the bearings are not the problem, its the way they are retained, press fit on crank & case is just not good enough.
next rebuild i will be retaining both.
my crank end float goes from zero cold start up to .4mm when hot. it wanders.
bushy has also noticed the same thing.
pull the magneto cover off & see if there is any float there.
if there is none, dont ride it.get back to me. & we can go from there.
