How Loud is Exhaust ?

one of the other aussie owners will help with what type of test they'll use as there are several different types and i don't know which they use in oz.

fresh silencer packing is good, but don't over pack as that will make it loud. if you have an fc look for an fe exhaust.

unless its going to cost extra money mightbe worth getting it tested first to see if it will pass .

there are also various silencer inserts which claim to reduce noise. do a search on this site and it should bring up a few threads.

If you send Fryguy a PM he could probably give you some tips. He has lots of hands on experience running Bergs of all flavours through FIM and regional tech and sound inspections over the last few years.

I watched them pass 8 bergs at the WEC round in Canada with a combo of stock and Akro exhaust systems. I think the limit was 94 and and the guys were not sweating the sound check so that means that the stock standard must be pretty close to 94.

It all depends on the test they perform.

If it is according to the FIM enduro tests, it will be a stationary test where the engine is run at a piston speed of 11m/s and the noise test equipment is set at 45 degrees and 50 cm from the exhaust pipe exit.

Under those conditions a standard oem enduro silencer will be fine but you will be seriously lucky to get the straight through mx silencer through that test at 94, most likely it would be about 98.

If the test is a drive by test, it is a whole different animal BUT the oem enduro pipe is sold as road legal, so you shouldn't have a problem.

So, in short, if it is straight through, you're going to struggle and for safety sake, get yourself an oem enduro silencer (off e-bay or something) because that has been made to the noise requirements you state above.

I had the biggunexhaust on my 2001 650 - with the race-insert! The dB-measuring tool went all the way to 120 at the distance of 1 meter. It's so noisy that it hurts my ears when I ride. And nobody wants to stay behind me in traffic..

But that was then - i have a 2006 now...

You can borrow my stock 05 muffler that is quite as anthing for the noise tests if you like.

in SA they do a 60kmh / 3rd gear 'roll by' being that you are basically coasting by without the engine being under any acceleration load, it is also good to controll the throttle so you dont get any deceleration 'pops' as they will blow the sound meter right off the richter.

check your exhaust end cap, on my FE550e 05, the dealer had the bent pipe in the spark arrestor chamber removed, and the tea strainers are removed on nearly all Bergs that come into Oz, with Tea strainer and that little 's' bend pipe in place, the exhaust is stock, and will pass.

depends how switched on the coppers are as well, they may jut look at the claimed DB on the side of the can and not check it.

take a look at the new end cap from Prorider its just been released its now an alloy unit with a mesh arrestor which quietens things down it can be removed but leave it in and get the same performance, im getting a batch of 10 berg ones made for me as we type. i have a picture of it at work email and i will send it [email protected]
