How does this head look to you?

I would think it could be salvaged. Pull it all apart and clean her up. As long as it's not damaged where the valve seats press in I would think it would be usable with a minimum of effort.
Best I can tell from the photos anyways.

That's what I was thinking.

Am I incredibly unlucky in getting a bad valve. Or should I be looking at kibblewhite valves.

I think OEM with one of taffys double spring kits shoud be fine.

Are they 37mm inlets?
If they are then OEM are gunna hurt.
Might need new plug too.

that head is easily cleaned up so i consider you lucky and not unlucky! they are breaking off valve heads all the time but you just can't spell it out to people enough!

clean it up, 2 new inlets, seats 3-way cut, DVSK, modify the decomp while you are there. jobs a good un!

Taff, What do you mean by; They?
Are the OEM valves breaking all the time. Or is it a bad design or a bad install.
I have no problem going to a specific brand of valves. If this is a reoccurring problem. The bike will be scrapped.

Also what is the details on your double valve springs? I have plenty of time before I fix the bike. So I could order some and have them shipped over here.

Lastly the piston is beat up a little. I'm thinking that it is an automatic replace. Am I correct in my thinking? splitting the case over here isn't trivial. Seems that it major money to split it. Then I am not in that loop. So I don't know who is really good at it.

well you do realise that the reason the valve head broke off is because the valves were whacking the piston like me hitting your head against the wall. you wouldn't like it and neither did the valves!

ok, i've had about 3 jobs in like that since i started in say 20 months. i have also sold heads etc to people who have had it happen. it only happens on the older engines so we are looking at the 2001 and 2002 years at present but it will creep up a little. luckily, the 650 got the '08' cam in 2003 and the rest got a milder cam the next year in 2004.

it only happens because of the valve spring and cam profile combination. finally people and camchain wear add to the mixture - in no order!

the DUAL valve spring set up is defo the answer.

the piston replacement means engine down and all that goes with it. have a look at the doc and at the chapters on rebuild, blueprinting etc. see if it encourages you!
