How do I tune out understeer?

Got my sag setup on the shock, started working with the fork. Set it to "sport" settings to start and I'm getting some understeer when powering out of corners where I used to rail. I'm a suspension noob. My gut tells me the understeer is caused by the rear end not squatting as much as it used to under acceleration with the stock preload, is that right? Or did I introduce that by messing with the fork?

I'm on a 2010 FE450. I weigh 200lbs + gear. Don't race yet, but will be in the C class. :)

The trails I was riding were pretty fast and flowing, some tight flat corners, some berms a few ruts.

Unfortunately I won't be able to get back to this same spot under next week. But I'm sure someone can save me some trial and error, thanks!

Hi
answer to your question fork too far down in the clamps, too much fork spring preload, fork rebound too tight
my guess rebound too tight
I didnt know that I had brother :D

hails viking brother!

Yeah, I was wondering if the rebound settings on the fork might have done it, I'll back that out. Oh I wish I had a riding area in my backyard... ;)

been reading my 'handling for enduros' report 'the viking'?

try a little extra HSCD and try and back off the LSCD. try and lay off the rear pre-load a little. if you can find a little extra in any of these you'll get the rear to squat under acceleration.

Actually Taffy, I was really tired when I posted this, so I missed your 26+ page post and the sticky at the top of the forum specifically about tuning... hehehe... oops. Lots of reading for me to catch up on!

1. "Got my sag setup on the shock". Okay, what are your sag numbers? Static=? Race or Rider sag=?

2. "I weigh 200lbs + gear". So does that mean you are 200 pounds in your birthday suit, plus your gear? So you are actually about 215-220 lbs in gear no?

3. Is your bike stock? Have you put on the proper springs?

Here is my best guess in the absence of the above listed information, as well as my recommendations. So my apologies if I have made the incorrect assumptions.

You have set rider sag with the stock shock spring, which has resulted in little or no static sag. E.G. Too much rear spring pre-load, and what you are interpreting as under steer is the bike actually knifing under. This is proven out by your statement "My gut tells me the understeer is caused by the rear end not squatting as much as it used to under acceleration with the stock preload, is that right?".

The PDS system is very sensitive to ride height. My best advice to you, keeping in mind that you are running the stock springs is to set the static sag at minimum and set the clickers and HSCD at the sport settings. This is the best you are going to get out of a bike that is not properly set up for your weight, E.G. springs, valving etc.....

Right now your bike is hanging down in the travel, and setting the clicker settings to sport is going to make the ride harsher but will help a little in the overall suspension action. By not having the correct springs installed the bike going to be more nervous, and will ride harsh, and then blow through the travel when you hit something hard.

No amount of clicker settings or pre load settings is going to make up the lack of proper basic suspension set up, especially the springs.

Hope this helps,

Dale

Thanks for the write up Dale (and the email). I'll reply here also, so nobody thinks I'm ignoring you... ;)

1. I had my shock setup by a local tuner shop at a trail on a ride day. I generally don't have help in the garage, so haven't done it myself. I've seen some cool setups for doing solo-setups, I might have to go that route. So I don't have the exact numbers, because I didn't grab the sheet he wrote them on. I will call the shop to see if he kept the sheet. But really, I just need to get a helping hand so I can confirm anyway.

2. I will throw my gear bag on the scale to get more accurate, but yes, I'd say around 220lbs with gear on.

3. Bike is stock. Trying to squeak out the best setup with the stock springs.

As far as my original issue: I backed the comp/reb damping to standard and went 3 turns on the fork preload. This did the trick to get me tracking better through the turns. The problem now is that I've ridden my "test trail" so much I'm a gear up now, so i'm blowing past my breaking mark in most turns... heheh.

Thanks everyone who replied!

no need to read 26 pages as there are 11. not quite sure where you got that from?

it's for the old model but there is an excellent account in there of exactly the same problem for me last year.
