i am trying to remove the rear spring and replace with a new one

MAW,

I have a 40 550, but have never removed the shock spring. But its Sunday, and you want to do this today, right!

From looking at the parts manual, I would do the following:

1. Remove the shock from the bike.

2. Loosen the clamp screw in the top spring retainer.

3. Back the top spring retainer up to the top of the shock. Your 04 tool kit had a flat wrench for doing this.

4. Turn the shock upside down, and separate the 4 items on that end of the shock. If you look at page 25 of your 04 parts Manual you will see them. Once they are separated, the item 43 spring retainer should slip off from the shaft, allowing you to remove the other 3 parts and the spring.

5. After reassembling the shock assembly with the new spring, set your sag per page 32-34 of your owners Manual. Remember to torque the clamp screw in the top ring per page 34. Eight Nm is 70 inch pounds.

Let me know if this helps!

Thanks for the reply Joe.

The problem we're having is the spring will not clear the lower mount body once the circlip and retainer are removed. The spring was changed at time of delivery by the dealer to accomodate my eldest sons weight, it's possibly not a 'berg spring. It's gloss black and has a 1" thick spacer at the valve body end, along with the adjusting collar. Do you think they may have removed the lower mount from the shaft to install the spring?

Mark,

Wow!

I would measure the ID of the replacement spring you have and determine if IT will clear the lower mount!

If you remove the lower mount, you will have to refill and pressurize the shock. I have never been there!

Amazing the uses you can find for KY Jelly, I can now add spring removal to the list.

Finally wrestled the spring off. It's an Eibach 25268D and it has a 1.5mm smaller ID than the new spring we just put on. I have no idea what this spring was designed for.

Thanks again for the help.

Regards, Mark
