Honing 03 liners for Woosner clearances......

Hi all,

Heres the story:

03 FE650- damaged piston & liner from pieces of main bearing embedded in piston skirt scoring liner.

Potential fix- use a 8551DA (99.94mm), DB(99.95) or DC(99.96mm) Wossner piston as required to allow for correct clearance honing depending on bore dia. required to eliminate minor scoring.

Just how thick is the coating on the liners- Is what I want to do possible ?? I imagine it should be, just woud like to hear from anyone who might have already done it.

I believe thefactory 03 pistons were slightly smaller than the above Wossners? Cant find any specs for the 03 liner or piston dia.

Any advice appreciated  .

what's the story AUSBERG ???

sounds like you have had a major incident .

Yes, your righ

It happened awhile ago and I have been unmotivatedto to fix it as my little 300 EXC keeps on chuggin along. (checkout the main bearing pics in my gallery)

But now you can finally get a decent size tank for it, the plan is to patch it up for some Murray Sunset NP firetrail jaunts, which is the sort of stuff the big berg excels at :)

when i siezed my ktm lc4 engine i found out a lot of info in regards to this.

Nikasli is a very hard and durable surface coating that is used in these barrels to improve reliability and performance. Due to this it is a very difficult thing to repair, i asked many people the same thing. I asked engine machinists, platers , but the best info was from the electroplaters and machinists where i work, all of them said you could machine the barrell, however you need to use a diamond hone, as a standard hone will simply peel the nikasil coating clean off the barrell. I looked at having the barrell replated, there are only two companies i know of in aus that will do this, electrosil in melbourne and aurom plating in brisbane. Electrosil have a very good reputation. However, Aurom plating here in Brisbane have a very very very bad reputation, some horror stories of plating coming off in the first 3-4 hours of operation.

If you replate they will ask for the piston so they can plate to the correct dimension for clearence.

I hope this helps a little

Try LA Sleeve in California they have been doing it for 50 plus years, & specialize in bikes.

Ausberg, here we go:

Technical Info/workshop-manuals can now be downloaded at : www.husaberg.se/Downloads.33.0.html

As far as I know Husaberg liners are NICASIL-coated, so honing won´t work without destroying the coating :(
the only (correct) way is to go for a new coating. (NICASIL has a very hard surface, also way better head-transfer than "non-coated"
surfaces and usually last almost forever)
Unfourtunatly professional replacement is very expensive (depending on diameter, so calculate at least € 200 , (don´t know the exchange rate in AU$ for it)
There are not many companys that can /or are allowed to coat with NICASIL (it was invented by Mahle- so if the company is not certified by mahle, it´s not the "real" Nicalsil")

Don´t think that the cheap way with no coating (like LaSleeve) is the way to go - but this is my personal opinion

I´m interested to hear others opinions?

Save yourself alot of grief and just buy a new liner. They are pricey but not nearly as expensive as having to go through the motor again when the nicasil flakes off.

i've had more nikasil linings than i care to admit to. the simplest and best answer is to get your next piston ausberg and send it off to be replated. you just can't save money on this one and i'm a specialist at saving money on anything!

the coating is unbelievably thin and once chinked it can't be honed. infact honing cane be done to the bits that stick up no problem but the actual bore is untouchable (as said above) because it's THAT hard!

the tolerance of the piston to barrel should be .0015" per inch of bore on an air cooled bike so it will be even closer on W/C jobbies.

so to reverse your question ausberg, the correct racing answer would be: send off barrel, have it measured as is and a quote, they will then weld the bombcraters while you order thepiston that will offer you roughly 5 thou clearance.

da-da!

Taffy

Thank you gokai134 well said. The price has been set.
Thank you Berger well said as well, buy the liner for around 70.00 more
without waiting 4 to 6 weeks! The price has been set.

Oh ya da-da taffy :D

Thanks for the opinions and advice guys

I know that a new liner as opposed to e recoat is the way to go for reliabilitys sake (thanks squizz for opinions on aussie coating companies)

Its just handing over the big genuine parts dollars (liner)for an older bike that hurts........
