Hole in seat/air box mod

My freinds,

It seems to be a easy/cheap trick to pick up a spare pony or two, at least on the newer bikes.

my question, is it a waste of time (and a seat) on the older bikes with two air filters or is there still some benefit there?
it seems like the side frame filter on the older bikes is the primary filter and the one on the top is there more for just a little extra but not much air really gets to it, most of my riding is on the road and high speed atv trails, and basically the more power the better, it all gets used here...

If its worth a shot, i would probably get a second stock seat to put on it for the woods/mud/rough trails, what year seats would interchange? i assume seats interchange 89-96 and then 97-99 would interchange, would the earlier seat work on a 97-99 bike? I know they look similar but if they actually fit may be another story...

If i am kicking a dead horse here just let me know and ill scrap the idea, i am happy with what i have as long as i know there is no more to be had, if there is any other cheap power adders i am open to suggestions as well.......

Just my opinion, but I think it is really dumb to do the mod in the first place. One, you are risking your motor if it rains and it just makes the bike loud. I even go so far as to put foam on the bottom of my seat to seal the sides from noise. Just my opinion, from the flip side.. I ride alot at night and around other houses.. if I have a nice ride in the dark without waking up the neighborhood, that is worth a "pony" to me..

also I cant stand loud bikes

Peace thanks for listening to my stupid editorial

I guess i didnt think about the noise, although i dont really care if it were louder, the factory muffler i have is fairly loud if im into it but pretty tame under half throttle and when crusing or at slow speeds, also there is ways to cover it from rain, i saw a picture of one in the gallery of someone who had a very cool velcro on cover, and it got me thinking there is a million ways to cover it in the rain, either before i left in the rain or if it started halfway through a trip,
I am only curious as to if it will add power even on a bike with twin filters, at top end or lil on the bottom, am i not concerned, every little bit helps, my engine internally is stock and maybe with the twin air filters there is more than enough air capacity through these it wont make any differnece, this is what i would like to know, i personally think if done properly the air filter mod looks cool two. if it wont add anymore snap then ill leave it alone! i assume it would do something though due to the way the top filter is seems restricted but i have been wrong before by assuming!!!

exhaust will give you a HUGE improvement, but I am sorry.. the hole in the seat mod.. no improvement in power, just loud and annoying

would the earlier seat work on a 97-99 bike?

The '96 and earlier seat is a couple of inches shorter than the '97-'99 seat. If you did install one you would have a gap between the rear of the seat and the fender. If I remember right, the mounting points are the same.

Cut away the shrouds to get better flow, my bike on the dyno showed no deficiencies with airflow with the seat on and the shouds cut to allow flow.

Is something supposed to go here? it could be possible to raise the front of seat slightly with a little riser peice to get more air to filter without a hole in the seat..

Also there is nothing for me to trim its all gas tank with no shroud to drill holes in or cut away,

another thing i am going to do for sure is turn my top air filter around so the big end is facing rearward as described in another post, i got it with it forward and never looked at it till now, the seat actually touches the filter if you watch it as you put it on with the filter big end forward

maybe ill try to see if there is a difference if the front of the seat way up make sure its not touching and plenty of flow and if nothing obvious 'seat of the pants' is felt ill leave it alone, the side filter is pretty open, it probably wont make a difference anyway on this old beater :D
