High speed stall?

Hello everyone and a good morning from fly over country.

To make a long story short I have a 1994 501FE which I have converted into a street legal motard.

The 501 starts in 3 kicks cold, idles good and runs well through the gears until I hit 5th and 6th gears, its as if like the bike runs out of fuel!

The speed is around 70 when I hit 5th and the bike will start to miss (not backfire) and when if I shift into 6th the bike seems to not have any fuel at all, it bogs when I open the throttle.

I back off the gas and slow down, shift down to 5th and the bike comes back to life, its like either the carb is not providing fuel or the pump can't keep up at higher speed?

I have cleaned, soaked and blown out the carb twice and have adjusted the float bowl / metering arm to dellortos specs, and installed a new UNI filter.

I am almost certain the carb is clean, I paid extra attention to all the ports and passages to make sure they all blew clean.

The manual calls for the air fuel screw to be at 1-1/2 to 2 turns out which I have it set at 2 turns out.

Is there something I am missing here for higher speeds on the Husaberg.

Thank You for any assistance you can provide!

John

Hi John,

I would check the carb vent lines and the gas cap vent line. If that does not solve the problem then I would run diagnostics on the fuel pump system.

Hi, john....
My '98 fc has filters inside the tank attached to the fuel petcocks, but they are not usually a problem. If you are still using the fe fuel tank and system, the fuel pump in the system occasionaly causes problems at large throttle openings. My recollection is the diaphragm develops pinholes or cracks that decrease pump output. There is a thread in our fuel system forums, should give you some info.

Gary, Corrrect me if I'm wrong here. Any problem with the diaphram pump would only start after the fuel is low and needs to be pumped to the pet cock side.

Venting or fuel starvation has to be the problem. Can the fuel cap venting be the issue? Try loosen it up and keep it kind of open while riding.

Good luck,

Hakan

Had a plastic screen in a Delorto fuel inlet elbow that refused to pass fuel even though it looked good. Fill the tank full, pull out all screens in tank and corb and try it again. Be sure someone didn't mistakenly replace the needle and seat with one from a pressurized fuel system. Hole is tiny and won't keep up with gravity flow.
