Hi everyone.
I just bought my first ever SM/berg. Its a fs650e 05 She has a new acrapovic ti system, but thats all.
I always had sportbikes and have raced for 15 years, but this is quite a new venture for me. But while its a pleasant one for some reasons, im finding out quite quickly that its not all fun and games with these bergs- or am i wrong ??

Im just woriied about the amount of use it can handle before it ''lets go'' and cost me a fortune. I checked the valve clearances last night and it took me 15mins start to finish inc rad off/rad on/bleed etc, so thats not too bad, but i changed the oil and found a whole load of metal over the drain plug (you could see the plug fine, but it looked like a cactus).
Is this normal ??

Bike has 44 hours 1400 miles easy road use( i know the guy who owned it before and he was a ploder and in his senior years)

Im used to bikes getting an oil change either 2 times a year, or every race if on my race bike, but reading some of the posts on here and other feedback from other sites, it seems that these berg engines are made from cheese and will blow up if full throttled for longer than 3 seconds. Have i been fed a load of bull ? or should i sell it on and just not get involved, but i love it. ??

Cheers

Gary

They are fine, especially one as new and as low hours as yours. The fine metal shards are normal for such a low hours engine as well, just change the filter every couple of oil changes and clean out the micro mesh filter as well.
Most big singles need frequent oil changes due to the very small amounts they hold, if they hold a lot like a XR650 then you pay the price in weight. They also don't like being held against the stop for prolonged periods.

Use good quality synthectic oil (Halfords stuff is fine believe it or not and you don't pay a 'branding' premium).

Clean the air filter, check the chain tension, check the valves and bleed the coolant system and you're ready to rock.

The newer Bergs are as good as anything out there reliability wise...remember that Forums contain information thats very heavyly biased towards problems because it's where people go for information to help them. They don't spend nearly as much of their time telling you about the good times...:)

They are as reliable as any high performance 4T but need to be looked after just the same.
Need a bit more info on the metal bits thou before I would say it's normal and ride on.
A few fine metal particles is probably OK.
Lots of big shiny bits that make the drain plug look like a cactus - not so sure.
If there are heaps of bits and it looks real bad then it probably is.
There are other forums in the mech section that show some pictures of what's too much.

Hey Gary,

Welcome to the site.

Could it be that the old ploder you bought it from didn't change the oil real regular? Some fuzz is normal on regular changes, the stuff almost turns to a paste when you wipe it off with a rag. You will get real spikey pieces on the plug if you extend your changes for a long time, or are abusive to the gear box.

Now that you changed the oil and done all the regular maintenance why don't you ride it for a while and change the oil again after 250 km's and see how things look. I change my oil a lot because I ride off road, and usually change my oil after every ride which is about 60-80 miles. Most of the time I find just the smallest amount of fuzz on the magnet. However, I'm not surprise to find a sliver now and again if I've been racing and had to bang a shift here or there.

I have 185 hours on my 04 FE550 for your information.
