Hello all,

I am new here and from gold coast aus. I recently bought a 2nd hand 04 fs650.
Been having a ball on it, so much more fun then my sports bike but getting me into trouble.
But the last ride it started making lots of ticking noise seemingly from the valvetrain.
The valves have recently been checked and adjusted. Any ideas or common probs i should know about.

cheers

detroit

ps, piccys of bike and random sillyness soon

Welcome to the site detroit! Recheck the valve clearances as they need to be watched/checked/adjusted on a regular basis. Oil quality and changing it often seems to really help. Look in some of the older posts for oils that are recommended and changing intervals. Thanks for dropping, and hope you love the Berg!

Check vlaves, used ... make sure the follower bearings are not worn, Check cam chain and tensioner, use delo 400 or shell rotella oil and change often.. filter every other oil change
Bergs make a bit of noise that is not what you are used to if you have been on a jap bike.
Enjoy the power wheelies :D
Welcome

Also, when you do check the valves, be sure to use a narrow feeler gauge...I wide feeler gauge will give you a false reading because your gauge is not contacting the actual valve end. This will cause you to make too large a gap, hence, lots of valve train noise.

thanks heaps for the fast replys.
Its was a street/race bike before i owned it and its all street work for me.
I change oil and filter every 800km and its motul 300v
The valves were checked at the local ktm/husaberg dealer so i would asume they should be right.I have done bout 570km since then.
The noise is like a loud ticking not like the slapping of a loose cam chain.

if it has done approx 1500 klm , the cam chain should be ok .

with low klms and a loud tick and would check the valve clearances again , just because they have been done by a dealer does not mean they are right .

dealers are only as good as the people who work for them .

Inspect the oil and filter for excessive metal. If all is good, inspect the torque on the primary drive nut for proper torque as nsman said.

Anyone can make a mistake setting valve clearance, including a professional, so re-check them. Also, some rocker arm cam follower bearings have been known to wear. The tiny roller bearings wear into the center pin, eventually just wearing away and disappearing. When like this, one can set the valve clearance, only to have it get seriously wrong quite soon. Luckily, if this is the case, it is an easily fixed situation. Installing new rocker arm bearings is easy and inexpensive. When mine went away, it was easy to diagnose. After pulling off the inspection cover, instead of the barely audible tick-tick of the valve clearance, I got an easily recognized tunk-tunk, I could feel the excess play, and could tell that something was amiss. Letting it go too long can and will destroy the cam. Don't ask how I know!
