Dale, I didn't know those still lived in CA (died) Is he 5X5 plus brow tines ? I went first season here, but the weather has been a little too nice and the big boys are still up pretty high. How far of a shot ? What are you shooting ? Did you tell your bike about it ? (wouldn't want to stray too far from motorcycles)

Hi Stove,

Sorry this reply is so late in coming, I just came across this thread.

This is a 6x6 (inclulding brow tines) that weighed about 750 or 800#. I got it on the same property that I deer hunt on in New Mexico. The shot was only 110 yards, with 1967 belgium browing in .300 Win Mag. 76 grains of IMR 4831, Fed 210M primer and a 168 grain Match King bullet. That gives about 3200 feet per second at the muzzle and a maximum point blank range of 407 yards with an 11 inch vital zone.

No, I don't tell my bike these trips. I usually make sure to clean her up nice, and give her a very good going over, cover her with a blanket and leave her on trickle charge. She never knows the difference. She probably just thinks I've been working a lot of hours again!

Hunting has to be interesting in the States.

I have never been in a country before where you can just walk in the wood and right there in the middle of the forest you meet a stupid deer staring at you wondering what you are.

In Europe as soon as they smell you (from about a good mile away), they run in the opposite direction, meaning I have not seen one ****** deer in the 20 years I lived in the countryside and I used to hunt too and we know they were there from the tracks and bite marks.

I don't mean it's easy to deer hunt in the States but it has to be somewhat easier. I'd have to get into that one day. Venison for Christmas dinner, much better than the meat platter from Costco.

Oh yes nice Elk by the way. You still have some meat left?

Hey Nic, I'm not sure who you talked to, but I've never just met a stupid deer staring at me while on a hike through the woods. Check with Dale on this one and I'm sure he'll tell you the same. When I've scored there was ALOT of sitting in cover, glassing the country side, and when I shot them they had no idea where it came from. With the muzzle velocities these days most of them died before hearing " BANG ! " BTW Dale where in New Mexico ?

It happened to me once when hiking by the Grand Canyon. I asked the guide and he told me it happens a lot. Did not look like he was planted there either. I am just reporting what I saw that day. Bizarre? Or maybe there are regions where the deers have not developed any fear of humans?

That´s because you never rode in Brazil, where you can see monkeys, cheetahs, deer and other kinds of animals but no hunting at all. If you shot a wild animal and get caught, you end up with a huge fine or some weeks in jail.

Nic, If you were near the Grand Canyon, were you inside the boundaries of the National park ? If you were then there is your explaination. No hunting is allowed inside any National park except by special permit if there is too many animals and they are thinning the herd. Or if you are at my house in which case you will see a lot of deer, because my wife feeds them.

I see. That makes some sense, but they may not have inherited the fear of humans that the European deers have. It's in their genes.

I never meant to say that deers just stay there like sitting ducks, but I found it awkward.

But then, in the States, squirrels come eat in your hands. European squirrels you usually only see the tails.

Over here we even have tigers hunting for people. :(

Interesting thread...right, out west, the wildlife was never around, especially during hunting season. Living here in north central Pennsylvania is a bit different...I have to drive slow and aware when leaving my house every day...the deer are every where here. In fact, I lost interest in hunting since they are so plentiful. When I go riding they are great fun when they cross my path...I am not going to say what usually happens next, but it puts a smile on my face....
