Help with jetting....05 FE550 with Lineaweaver jet kit

Hi all,

I have an 05 FE550 with 16 hours on it, and I just adjusted the valves and had to pull the plug. I was amazed at how black the plug was with carbon, and when I put a zip tie down the spark plug hole and pulled it out it had a lot of carbon on the end from the top of the piston. Dale installed his jet kit when the bike was new, and I've been happy with the performance, but after seeing the plug it's obviously running very rich. It has a 150 main jet, so I'm reluctant to go much smaller. I had to go down to 1/2 turn out on the air screw on my last ride to get rid of the snap bog. I've tried emailing Dale for advice but I know he's a busy guy. Any advise would be appreciated.

i run a 35PJ but dale insists on a 48 for some reason. there is no need for it as the needle straight is the equivelant (at least on mine!) to between a P and Q which is veryt rich. the combination of a rich straight and the 48PJ mean the bike is way too rich in this area. this will be your problem and not the MJ. this is why you have a black plug.

i have his needle on clip 1 - the highest position on the needle (and therefore the leanest setting).

Thanks to Joe I got my carb straightened out, and the bike runs better after going to a 160 main jet. :D My only concern is it starts right up with no choke needed, so Taffy's info about needing a smaller pilot sounds about right. I'll try a 35 pilot this week and see how it goes.
