I need some help, I am a scoutmaster, and the older kids want to build something using composite materials, i.e. carbon fiber, etc. There is a merit badge for this , new in 2006. what I am looking for is some links to pages that have good, easy to understand information, and possibly some ideas for some projects.

get them to make a small fibreglass boat that they can race against each other.

I'm a crew member for the U-37 Spirit of Seattle hydroplane race team. Carbon fiber, fiberglass etc. we use every day. Anyway, the cost of carbon fiber has just shot thru the roof. It is a form of fiberglass, so maybe using fiberglass would be cheaper. You can make all kinds off cool stuff. Have your troop wear gloves and long shirts when working with the materials or you'll have some itchy kids and unhappy parents! Carbon fiber under the finger nails, stings for days! If I can help with any questions, let me know.

risky. Have them build heat shields for H-berg !
Yes, please!! I keep thinking of attempting this myself, but I have a mental block. Anyway, here's one: http://www.racingcomposites.net/

and another: http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles/composite_panels/

and one more: http://www.turbomustangs.com/techarticles/PBcarbonfiber.php

:) Try www.ls-design.co.de. They have carbon fibre front exhaust shield and shield just before the rear muffler = around Euro110 for both: Expensive but better than burning/melting your pants/boots almost everytime
