help! I just moved here to SoCal (san bernardino county), from the best off road riding area in the country, Nevada. I have been searching places to ride, but the closest spot I have found, an "official" ohv area, is a JOKE. The san gabriel ohv near azusa, ca. It takes forever to get there, Its TINY. Its crowded. And it looks like nothing but gravel and rocks, and no place to open it up.. Is this all that is left for us in California? places like this? I am gettin ready to plunk down over 8 large for a new 'berg. But I sure as hell wont if thats repersentative of places to ride around here. Is there any hope? Where are there decent places to ride in southern california?

what model and capacity did you decide to spend $8000.00 on .

new bergs are $13.500 aus.d out my way , and worth every cent .

Go to the BLM website and look up Johnson Valley OHV area http://www.blm.gov/ca/barstow/johnson.html . It's about 150,000 acres, and it's probably about an hour from you. That's where I do the majority of my riding/racing. In fact the Checkers MC are having their hare & hound out there tomorrow, and that's where I'm headed.

Here are some simple directions to get you there. Take I-15 north like you're going to Vegas. Get off at Bear Valley Road/Lucerne Valley. It's like the first exit past the the HWY 395 exit. Keep going east and follow the signs towards Lucerene Valley. Once in Lucerne, just keep heading east, the signs will probably say something like Yucca Valley/29Palms. The first sign you will come to that will say something about Johnson Valley OHV area will be Camp Rock road. Camp Rock Rd is the first of 3 access roads and will get you riding the fastest. It will be a left, as all the access roads will be, and just follow the signs. Eventually, if you take camp rock, you will end up at Anderson dry lake staging area. There is a sign there with a big map to show you where you're at, and the boundaries of the riding area.

If you didn't turn on camp rock and you kept going, the next turn off you would come to is Bessimer mine road, again there will be signage that you can't miss. After that there is Boone road that will take you to Means dry lake, I don't reccomend this road unless you have 4 wheel drive as there is some pretty deep sand in a couple of sections.

Our club race (Huntington Beach Motorcycle Club) HBMC is coming the weekend of 3-11/3-12. I am running the kids event on saturday at 3 pm in the afternoon. You are more than welcome to come and check out the scene, but, I'll be kind of busy that weekend but, I'm sure I can find sometime for you after the kids race or on Sunday.

Feel free to give drop me a pm and we can hook up. You have to drive a bit to get the area's here in cali, but, there is plenty of riding to be had.

Hope this helps,

Thank You Dale! Glad to know there are some big areas, the place I mentioned was approximatley 80 acres...no more than a hundred max. I counted no less than 70 riders! I will definitely take you up on your offer.

Since I'm from So Cal (now residing in Southern OR)...you have a few choices and some are better than others...Im from Orange County so our closest decent riding area was Hungry Valley (Gorman) which is about 1-1/2 Hours North from OC and has some nice Forest Trails (now a cluster of Quads so be careful) or Ocitillo Wells which was about 3 hours South from OC (go to Poleline Road on off weekends or during the week) or Jawbone Canyon which was about the same or 4 hours North East out the 395 or Johnson Valley 2 hours or Red Mountain 3-3-1/2 hours which is where most of the District 37 races are held ( I hope you like rocks and desert). Once a year you must try and get an invite to the SOBOBA TRAIL ride (Malcon Smith Invite ride) which if your skilled, will test your riding ability (AWESOME RIDE!! in February), Big Bear has some nice wooded trails and the Sequoias (sp?) are excellent in September before the 1st snow. Have fun...
