hello im having a bit of a problem with my 06 450fe. i can't get the damd thing to run ok .ive cleaned out the carb, changed the ht lead, cap and plug and checked for splits in the rubber boots but still no joy. to get it to run at all i have to turn in the mixture screw to one turn out and turn the tick over up high to stop it from stalling and it will only start with the cholk on. it pops and bangs and runs over due to the tickover been so high. it has standard jetting. any ideas would be most welcome cheers

A little history please. When did this start happening?. Any symptom's prior to the problem? Hour's on the bike? Spark plug?

Without any history, I am shooting in the dark, but that hasn't ever stopped me before.

I just got through performing all that you did on a Kawasaki quad that had the same symptoms. As a last resort I bought a 1 gallon carb dip/cleaner and after disassembling the carb let it sit in the dip over the Christmas holidays. Then I washed it out with water and blew it out with a spray carb cleaner. Now it runs as good as new. I wasted months fighting with it. There must have been some passages and ports that the spray could not clean and only soaking would do.

Just a thought.

there is a plate on the carb slide that can be put in the wrong way up?

might try that.

regards

Taffy

thanks for the suggestions so far everyone. the problem started after a visit to the jetwash a few rides ago, but after standing at the side of the radiator in my garage, the next time i got the bike out it was fine so i put it down to water in the electrics or something. then after doing an event on what was basically a snow covered sand mx track the problem returned. i dont know the mileage as when i bought it secondhand the speedo was new still in the box but looking at the general condition of the bike i dont think its been to the moon and back. hope this will be of help.

sounds like a carb problem to me.
make sure your carb vent tubes are not blocked.
almost sounds like a crack in the carb slide plate(sucking air),but that is generally not a problem with the mk2 fcr carb....but ,never say never.pull the top of the carb off remove slide and inspect plate & o-ring.
needle and seat can stick if worn, its not leaking any fuel out the overflow? tapping the side of the carb with a hammer can release it,if its sticking.
pilot jet and passage is definitely clean?
dunno...sounds like its sucking air from somewhere.my bet would be carb slide plate or sucking air around carb side rubber boot.
..weed..

just want to say thanks to everyone for all the advice. taff you were right what a simpleton i am schoolboy error. when i cleaned the carb out i got rid of quite a bit of crap but it helps if you put the thing back together right. doh
