Help Me Evaluate a Potential Purchase

I saw this about a month ago on the KTM/Husky/Berg Swap Meet Facebook page:

2007 husaberg 450
Tried firing it on starting fluid during cold weather and I think something bad happened. The timing has slipped so the head will have to come off. Its got full ackroprovic exhaust and sumo tires. Got a trail tech and a steering stabilizer. Big front rotor and external oil reservoir. Ill let it go cheaper than the parts alone because I don't wanna part it out. Message me any offers. "

I PM'ed the guy:

"Hi _____. I'm Bill up in Goobertown. Can you take a guess what you suspect is wrong with the Husaberg? Do you suspect that it hydro-locked on a bunch of starting fluid maybe? Had it been in running condition prior to the event you mentioned?"

Him:
"Hey bill
Yeah it ran prior to me buying it but the guy had it sitting for about 5 years.
He parked it originally due to water pump seals leaking, which I have the parts for.
I tried to fire it up,after cleaning the carb and flushing fuel from the tank.
It fired on starting fluid maybe 10 times but wouldn't stay running. Then the starting fluid had no effect. It was 30 degrees outside and I worry I did valve damage or the timing slipped during an ether lock.
I've swapped carbs and plugs verified spark pulled the valve covers rockers are moving valves seem tight by touch and feel
I've verified suction and pressure from both the exhaust and intake side so I am sure there is a valve train or timing issue."

Me:
"So the motor's not seized, the piston still moves?"

Him:
"Yes
No bad sounds or clanking. I changed the oil first thing before starting any repairs
No metal on the plug,"

I have confirmed it has a clean local, title and is tagged as street legal.

What do you guys reckon? I'm having problems with his idea that it "slipped timing", but I've heard dumber diagnoses of various things. I surmised that when he said he "swapped the carb" he swapped it with another (running) supermoto that he owns, just to quickly eliminate a gunked-up carb as the problem.

This thing is within a reasonable distance of me and I'm considering snagging it for a song and fixing it up for my kid as a college graduation present.
 
Yeah the idea of timing slipped doesn't sit well with me. Compression test should tell u a story about engine mechanical condition. If compression is good then no efing way that timing slipped. If compression bad then do leak down test. And look where its pissing air if its bad. Verify tdc and timing marcs. Starting fluid could bend conrod if it had hydraulic lock. Now i shut up nd let someone with experience on these motors share their thoughts.
