HELP!!! I have a 2000 FC501 that has 4 bent valves!

I need advice on a 2000 FC501. I bought it used not running. I took it to a local Husaberg dealer and they told me it has 4 bent valves and will cost around $1000 to fix it! Does anybody have any suggestions? I hate to spend that much money on it knowing I won't get it back out and if I do should I do something to the head and get better valves, etc..? I guess I'm trying to jusify spending that much money. What is the possibility of finding a used complete head? Any help, advice, encouragement, donations - (just kiddin') would be appreciated. Thanks.

there isn't $1,000 worth of work there.

i would get another price. if it came down to husaberg specialist v local dealer i would go local at a good price. this is basic mechanicis.

The only ways I can think of to get 4 bent valve stems is for either some one to install a cam chain with improper positioning of the cam relative to piston TDC, and them try to start the engine by pulling the bike with another vehicle.

If so you probably have more than just valves to replace and $1000 may be a low number.

The other thing that came to mind was for the cam chain to break at full speed. You would most likely notice a hole in the cam cover if this happened.
Its more than likely a broken valve spring. If the valve hasn't dropped into the cylinder then the fix is much cheaper, even if the valve is slightly bent.

I dropped a valve on my 501 because the valve spring broke. I removed the head and had the head reworked then reinstalled it myself.

The valve guide had to be replaced because it was damaged also.

Total cost for the head work was $265 US, this included a new intake valve and intake guide, and a valve grind job on the head.

Separately I had to buy 4 new valve springs.

If you are not mechanically inclined to do the easy work you should get another estimate. Some minor disassembly is necessary to determine the failure mode and give you a good estimate!

The minimum would to be to remove the valve adjustment covers for a look see.

Joe

Thanks for all of your help!

Thanks for your replys guys I appreciate it. I am looking at other alternatives like an entire motor. I'm trying to figure out if there is any differences in the 501 engine between 1996 to 2000? If anyone knows, please fill me in. Thanks again.

RE: Thanks for all of your help!

you really should be finding out what is wrong with yours before you make any decision. to get another engine now is totally the wrong move - sorry!

you can learn 50% by touching nothing bar plug out and rocer inspection caps off. you can learn 95% by taking the head off.

If you can get Peter at HMS he has loads of used parts. I'm sure he will have a head. 505-870-4807. For new parts such as gaskets, cam chain etc. used to assemble the thing, call Dan at Moto Exotica. 707-446-2482

Thanks again - Good advice!

Thanks Taffy that's good advice - I already have a motor, why take a chance on one I know nothing about!

Also Thanks to DsDucati - I talked to Peter at HMS - what a Great Contact! He is very knowledgable about Husies! He is checking on some used parts for me as I write this.

Thanks again guys for the great advice it sure helps!

RE: Thanks again - Good advice!

You gotta see what caused it and what other damage is done.
Get the head off.
If it is only valves then it shouldn't be that bad.
They charge extortionate rates for the older OEM valves (for my model anyway I'm going thru it now).
I'm getting a complete custom set made as we speak and they're costing me less than the price of 1 OEM inlet with $60 bucks change.

RE: Thanks again - Good advice!

They are charging $150 for each exhaust valve and $75 for each intake valve so it is $450 plus tax just for the 4 valves. Does anybody have any other suggestions on aftermarket valves (good quality of course)? Thanks.

try the 2000 525exc KTM valves the whole top end is compatable with the berg. look up bikebandit and go through there microfich schematics and you will see what i mean. its just like looking at the berg manual only different part numbers seperate the two

Try to email Lineaweaver. He may still have a good source for valves.

The design is similar. The parts being interchangable, highly unlikely.

motoskier,
mate...i sympathise with you big time. but my advice is ...listen to Taffy.
Pity you ain't a mechanic...it is nowhere near that much{$1000} to do that work. you must know someone who can fix motorbikes. the husaberg is a basic design. admittedly there are a few funnies on it , but if you had a mechanic friend ..they could read about the funnies specific for your bike on here. buy them a slab of beer and you saved all that $$$$ and if you watch them strip and biuld it...you would have confidence to have a go your self!

design simular parts interchangabilty doubtful?
funnythat my bike has now been running those OEM KTM parts for a few months know 40HRS without a problem what came out was exactly the same as the KTM parts that went back in.[/quote]

my bike know has more OEM KTM parts in the top end than OEM berg and i dont have the dreded backorder problem go figure that one out :D

Very interesting. Thats definitely worth checking into. Almost all of the new stock parts are coming in KTM boxes. There have been shortages in hard parts throughout the first part of the decade. It's strange this has not come up sooner if it is indeed a viable source of parts. I have know people to wait 6 months at a time for OEM valves and seats

Hi flatchat
Do you still have all the Part N#s of the stuff you know to be OE KTM that will fit ?
If so can you post it them here to get added to the doc.
Alot of guys here would appreciate that. Me for 1.
I know the cams are the same but need the wp shaft removed.
Why the hell didn't you join this site earlier??? :cuss:

I'm currently getting some valves custom made because of the cost of berg OE for the early inlets.
Getting them made has been cost effective ($40-45 each) but has also been a pain in the arse as no one specialises in bikes, not local anyway and it's taken a couple of weeks now.
First attempt looked the goods but were heavier than original because they left extra material on the faces. Back they went back to get that removed.
Definitely check into the KTM thing first but I will keep you posted on my end result.
