Head gasket

t-jet-tim,

It isn't too involved:

1. drain coolant
2. remove rocker cover
3. split cam chain
4. unbolt head
5. change over the head gasket
6. reassemble

job done.

A competent mechanic will do this within the hour.

a KTM dealer should be able to get the the gasket, I really would hope so.....

The head gasket replacement is fairly easy and straight forward. Do you really think the gasket is leaking?? You might try retorqueing the head bolts. You may consider dying your coolant as well to help locate the leak.

in my sheet tim i describe how my dealer (who really knows his stuff) has different torque figures-gives it some more. at least try it first.

Change the gasket and be done with it. Providing it is the issue (which it probably is).

As I said in your other thread, the 01/02 gaskets has a tendency to leak. The 03 onwards gakstes now have a silicon compound on them to prevent this from happening - so it's worth doing.

I'm sorry but re-torquing, or re-tightening, whatever you want to do with a head and head gasket is just a cheap route to nothing. You' can actually cause more trouble than you solve by doing this.

It's obviously your decision though.

Just wanted to second what Simon mentioned.

Make sure you get the new style head gasket. It has blue seals running around the perimeter of the gasket and the silicon coating gives the gasket a sticky feel.

Make sure your dealer is aware there is a newer part number for the headgasket. If he orders the old one you will never get it. BMG should have the new number in stock. You might give Dan a call at Motoexotica a call as well, he is real good about shipping parts out same day if he has them in stock.

Since my bike hit about 25 hours
I have noticed some coolant on the right
side of the motor. What all is involved
with a head gasket change? Will my
ktm dealer be able to get the gaskets?
What do dealers usually charge for this
service?If I add my hours up,riding vs
working on it I am running about 60/40
and this will definetly put me over 50/50.

Right side huh? I would check to be sure the radiator overflow hose isn't the source. It sits on the right side on my bike and sometimes I forget to slip the end through the bottom zap-strap.

It's always a good idea to positively identify the source of the leak before you start tearing things down.

Hi Grok,

you´re right but
I think j-jet-tim checked it already, didn´t you Tim?
I also gave him some hints in another thread, but now my own engine looses also
some coolant. But I don´t see where it´s going.
Maybe my head geasket should also be changed. I wouldn´t have expext that.

I hope I didn't come off as condescending or something, but I have found people will leap from symptom to conclusion without trouble-shooting the basics first. I've done it myself.
Keep us tuned in Tim.

Hi Grok,

no you´re not, no cause for thinking about that.
You couldn´t know that we already discussed this subjet.

By the way: My head gasket is still ok, I realized my water pump cover has got a leak.

greetings

Andrew at Euromotors 248-680-4179 he has them in stock, I just got off the phone with him ordering my 470's repair parts. He had everything on the self. If you don't feel like doing it, he'll gladly do for you.
