can anyone help me out on this . my mates 470 fc think its a 2003 his head gasket as blown ... as anyone got part of the manual telling you how to change it step by step .. setting up the cam timing and what marks to line up ect would help alot . or if anyone knows a site where i could look at a online manual that would help

Just interested,
were was the location of the failure on the head gasket? i.e front, rear
thx ...nsman

hello mate . it was on the left side right in the middle i havent took it off yet but you can see that its gone there because its black. the manual isnt very clear on the one i downloaded . if i undo the timming sproket and take that off hold the chain with some wire so it doesnt drop into the engine . replace the gasket then put timming marks to tdc and make sure cam lubes are facing down will that be ok . on the manual the photos are really dark so cant see then very well

That should work for you. It is not an difficult operation. A couple of hours at most if you are somewhat mechanically inclined.

...Just remember that the cam chain has a link that should be positioned on the cam sprocket when you break the chain.

thanks for the info .hey on this cam chain i cant find the split link. do i have to split it then buy a new link to replace that one... also does anyone know a site where i can check the year of the bike by the vin number . because hes not sure weather its a 2002 or a 2003 model and wasnt sure about the parts ..........
if i have to get a split link to replace the one i take off... were is the best place to get one from

Yes it looks like you will have to buy the split link in order to reassemble.
The 02-03 both use P.N. 200 309-01

If you post some pics we can help you ID the bike :)

thanks for the info i will see if dave clarke racing can get me one. all the best.thanks

Hi Spuddy,
You will have to get a new cam chain link, check the type of chain(brand) you have as it will dictate the link required. If you do not see the link it is no doubt the pressed up type and it will look a little different the the rest and have peened over pins.Resist the temptation the cut the chain and install another link.If your cam sprocket is aluminum is likely a 2002 and if it is steel more likely it is a 2003 although there are no doubt exceptions .

thanks to everyone who replyed to me .. the bike is up and running again now all the work as been done but i did have a few problems..i changed the gasket making sure nothing moved when i took the chain off. ..put it all back together but she wouldnt fire i have a big bruise on the bottom of my foot..my mate came round and checked the work i did . he thought that because it wasnt firing i might of put the cam back in 180 d the wrong way . so we took the cover off but everything was ok .looked at the wires i took off even put a new plug in it but still nothing.. anyway he noticed that the decompresion wasnt returning right back even though when i kicked it over it seemed all ok and it felt on the kick start ok . so he just cracked the lock nut and wound it in a couple of turns and wayyhayyy it started up . so to all the newbies like me if you ever change your head gasket just make sure your decompresion is returning right .....
that leads me to another question. is the a e/ start kit i could fit to my bike and what sort of money would it cost .
cheers

one day my bike was leccy boot and the next i'd converted it to just kickstart. all the bits sit here.

it's a battery and tray, soleniod switch type thingy, leccy starter and idler gear along with sprague bearing. the sprague needs replacing. it has the super powerful YTZ7S battery on it. i think you just need a button for it to work as you already have the kill switch. i need the button for my 'high/low' switch.

if you're in the Uk/europe and you're interested-give me a PM.

regards

Taffy
