Has a mechanic with a grudge drilled a hole in my Berg????

Now I'm not finding this easy to believe....

I mean I really could never, ever, imagine somebody, even an a$$hole, intensionally doing something like this, so I hope this is easily explained.

Took mi Berg into a local garage for an MOT. Also took a horn in that I was given last MOT, but have not gotten round to fitting & asked for it to be fitted prior to the MOT.

Mechanic remembered giving it me last MOT & really took exception to it not being on the bike. OK, you could argue I should have put it on, but quite honestly I have hardly ridden the bike over the last year (3 hrs tops, and then thats back & forth to garages and the occasional blurt round a business park).

So anyway, he gets all arsey, tuts, shakes head etc, but the other guy who worked there was a sort of peace keeper, and said they would sort it...

Anyway, left it there (against my gut instinct), & picked the bike up later on, whereby;

1. Petrol taps were turned off, OK not a biggy, as the only consequence was conking out on the main road, but I quickly found the problem & turned them back on (perhaps this was only being helpful and is common practice...?)

2. One of the head light bulbs was not working, so assuming it was the bulb, bought a new one. Took cover off to fit bulb, and wire is detached (wire "ripped off"), so either pulled out the back of the unit, got caught accidentally & not noticed, or it fell off of its own accord......?

3. I was only given a partial MOT, i.e. with advisory note which basically says "I have no lights" - I do have full lights, but no indicators. This was the reason stated by them for issuing the advisory notice. However, "off-road" style motorcycles ("'off road' machines which are designed to carry only the rider."), are exempt from requiring direction indicators, this I argued (from having previous experience of the clause from an earlier, successful MOT), but to no avail. Another local MOT garage have confirmed they would provide a full MOT without an issue. (see http://www.motuk.co.uk/mcmanual_150.htm)

4. Super B battery connectors snapped off. Was told "there was a problem, but it has been fixed". The connector that has been used to replace originals will not plug into the specific Super B battery charger connectors, so have had to order new ones to the tune of £18. Have requested they reimburse me for this which they have agreed to. So OK, perhaps just further accidental damage.

5. Now the next one is the real concern. Please see the attached photo, specifically where the green arrow is pointing;

I got back home earlier tonight after a 30 minute ride & saw significant dripping of fluid which was running down the casing a creating a pool on the drive. I took a closer look & found it was coming from a "hole"in the casing. It is a very neat hole, so is mechanical in origin (drilled?).

I cannot find reference to this hole in the spare parts manual for the 2004 bikes. I have never noticed it before, and all of a sudden I am noticing fluid running from it when the bikes hot.

Should it be there with a grub screw or something in it, or shouldn't it be there, i.e. has this been drilled???

Any info appreciated.

Thanks

Crispin

Its meant to be there its a weep hole for the waterpump common problem on husabergs. I'm sure there are aftermarket kits available to remedy it.

Cheers Peej, thanks for the feedback,

So does anyone know why this may have suddenly started to leak?

I noticed that the water from it does not appear to have any coolant in (although I gave a bottle of MOTUL "Mr Cool" to use recently when I got the starter motor gear fixed, so I don't think it must have been added).

Perhaps then it is now running hotter as a consequence, and hence weeping through the hole?

Should I drain & add coolant to see if this fixes the situation?

Thanks

Crispin

Crispin,
Two kinds of fluids can weep from this hole.
If oil then the orangeberg weephole kit is a good fix. I let my oil wee from 20 hrs until 120hrs
because it wasnt that bad. I have fixed it now.

The other weep from this hole is coolant of course. It seems that this is your problem I had that problem too.
Many of our Husabergs begin weeping coolant at or even befor 100 hrs when the waterpump seal starts going out.
So an OEM waterpump seal is in order.

When filling the radiator do not put more than 10mm of coolant above the fins you see inside.
Do not top off because it creates more pressure and can make the weep increase.

If you are running your bike lean it also gets hotter and may boil a little easier.

As pollo stated this is a weep hole and is designed to let you know when one of your seals is bad.

Since you are going to be pulling the side case to fix this seal, I highly recommend that you get hold of Orangeberg and install one of his kits while you have it apart.

The stock water pump seals are a bugger to get in correctly with their metal casings, be sure and use a good drift, not a socket to do it with. Brass or aluminum is best, I use a piece of 1" diameter aluminum round stock to seat the water pump seal. And don't be surprised when you put the new seal in if it doesn't weep a little at first, as sometimes they take a little bit to seat into the groove that's already there.

If you install Evans coolant, which is waterless, you will have a zero pressure system from now on. You just have to be smart about running your bike as Evans doesn't boil until 400 degrees. I have been running Evans NPG-R in my 04 550 and 01 501 for some time now with no issues. The only draw back about Evans is that it is not meant for use below 32F or 0C. Below those temps, it actually contracts, and thickens. Although I have used mine in temps well into the low teens with no problems, just be sure to let the bike warm fully. I have not lost another water pump seal since switching to Evans.

KTM PN# 46035056100 is a 10x18x4mm full rubber jacket (maybe silicone) seal, little blue one

you can use a 10x18x6mm from any bearing supply shop too if needed.

Thanks very much guys, I'll get myself sorted shortly. As I'll be draining the water I'll add some coolant as well while I'm at it.

Thanks again!!

If indicators are fitted they must work or you get a failure. however, if you were to remove them they would have passed the bike (headlamp working of course).

same goes for a spare wheel. if you have a bald spare wheel = remove it for the MOT.

there are several examples of 'if it ain't there it can't be failed on it'.

you could have dropped him right in it if you'd been pulled for a check and no horn found: then he thinks that you'd have blurted out: "but he let me off at the MOT test centre!". He's have lost his license. a favour is just that and you needed to go straight home and put it right Chris.

I used to take 4 MoTs a day to Newmarket and they had to trust us with every single 'dodgy' pass. If I got home and my Dad mumbled I would tell him exactly what the alternative and the consequences were for Golding's Garage.

I'm just being straight with you Chris, no offence meant.

No probs Taffy, no I've had the horn fitted, its on, and I accept that point, which is why I took the horn & asked them to fit prior to this latest MOT. It was at that point he saw his arse.

And there are no indicators on the bike as you say, but he said that they should be fitted therefore I have "no lights whatsoever", because some (indicators), are missing. I thought the same as you, they are not fitted + an off road bike does not require them, so the no lights (or daytime MOT"), was just being arsey IMO.

Cheers
