Hard starting 501

I finally got a new battery in my 2002 501; however the starter will not turn the bike over (repeatedly) unless the compression release is engaged. Is this the proper way to start the bike, or should it start without the use of the compression release? I have only tried starting while the bike was cold, I don't know if it would be different when the bike is warm or not.

Hi SQ. This site is the best site I've ever been on for A/ getting answers for questions & B/ finding answers on old posts.

Have a look at this post below - search (top right of screen - advanced - arkley or any 501 hard start q's), and really take a look in the "Doc". You'll find that on the left hand box on the home page.

You will however always find the same answer for an 02 FE501...

Valves / carb jetting / auto decomp upgrade / Taffy cresent mod / beefed up starter.

Not as daunting as it sounds.

Good luck & have fun.

The electric start on the older Berg's is listed as a "restarter". Not recommended to be used to start from cold. That may have be true a few years back, but now with the availability of some great aftermarket Lithium batteries you can use the starter to crank up the beast. I am currenty using the 8 cell battery from E-Batt http://ebattonline.com/index.html. It is as light as a feather and has tons more cold cranking amps than the stock battery every dreamed of having. The lack of cold cranking amps is reason the stock starter doesn't work so well.

I have one of the "beefy" starters from Taffy (could not get it to bolt up correctly) so I put the stock starter back in place, hooked up my new 8 cell E-Batt and hit the starter button. It cranked right over and fired right up without hesistation. Call Dan at MotoXotica and get your E-Batt today.

I have no vested interest in the E-Batt company, but when you come across a product that does the job and does it well, you let people know about it.

I love riding but am mechanically inept. My 501 was really unpredictable to get started, the anxiety spoilt events. Two weeks ago I took the bike to the Taffmeister and was shown what the problem was, the decompression spring was failing to do it's job. In trying to sort out the starting issue before I had wired up a spare battery to get more amps and successfully cooked the starter motor. The bike now starts really reliably and I don't worry about 'if' it will start. Great value help from Taffy and Adam, they have extraordinary patience in teaching people and now I have a really useful 501! Before you burn it, call them.
