Hard starting 07 FE450

A little history,
My 07 FE450 has the following:
- needle NCVS slot 4 (1 top, 7 bottom)
- 162? MJ
- 85 PAJ
- 40 PJ
- idle air jet - 100
- main air jet - 200
- mixture control screw 1 1/2 turns out

It had this when I bought it, with the exception of the 162 MJ. It had a "RD162" jet, which I have recently noticed is slightly larger that what I have now. The RD162 was stripped so I replaced it with the 162. However, with the new 162 MJ all has run fine before.

1/2 way through my last ride it started running poor. Starting was fine and easy (could easily kick start it), wide open is mostly fine, but 1/4 - 1/2 throttle would stumble quite a bit.

So a few nights ago I pulled the carb apart and found a lot of oil. I figure this is because I put a little too much oil in (closer to top of sight glass than bottom when not running) and I dumped it on its side more than a few times. It's how I tend to ride. It's a skill.

I cleaned up the oil (idle air seemed plugged) and figured it would purr like an angry kitten once I put it back on. It didn't. I struggled for a long time to even get it started using the starter. Finally I found that it would try to kick a bit if I pulled the Hot Start. So, I finally got it running by giving it just a smidge of throttle when turning it over. Seems to run OK, but will not idle at all. Idle adjustment screw does not help. I can restart if I give the throttle a bit of a twist, but absolutely nothing if I don't.

When I could not get it to start, I pulled the plug. It was sooty black, but dry. Had good spark by the way. I had given it plenty of throttle twists so I expected the plug to be wet, but it wasn't.

A few things I did and noticed when I had the carb apart. I turned down the accelerator pump a bit by backing off that screw. I disconnected the TPS plug. Probably more important is the o-ring on the needle jet (atomizer) is basically shot. It looks like crap but I don't have one to replace it with, and don't have time to order one for my next (small) trip.

I'm going to dig into it again tomorrow, and am hoping to find some jet plugged, or that I assembled something wrong. From the plug I have to assume it needs fuel. From the "twist the throttle a bit to get it to start" it seems like it could be air.

Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks all.

These bikes can be a b'tard to start when they are standard and new.

Try putting all the standard jets back in.

Failing that, Mr Taff will be along shortly.

I suspect that something is not right with the carb after you have assembled it.
I had a similar fault when I fitted the "vacuum release plate" upside down. It is the plate that fits onto the "throttle valve comp" (I would call this the slide that goes up and down that the needle attaches to).

PS.
Your jetting is very different to what I am running since I fitted Taffys Jetting kit :bounce3:

The first time I pulled the carb apart I put that plate in upside down. Learned that lesson early.

I've got the carb apart and I think the idle jet is suspect. It seems somewhat clogged. I can only get a single strand of copper wire in there, pulled from a piece of speaker wire.

I pulled the jets and soaked them in carb cleaner overnight. Cleaned it all up and put it back together this morning.

Starts fine now, but stil lhas this stumble 1/4-1/2 throttle although not near as bad. At WOT, it runs great until higher up in the rpm range where it starts to fall a little flat. I don't' think I will fiddle with it too much until I get a new atomizer tube since I know that o-ring is shot. And maybe I'll order a kit from Taffy.

Current MJ is 162. Is this an OK jet to run at sea level? Currently I am at 5000 feet, but am going down for this next trip.
