Hands Tingle !!

The other day after a fairly solid ride my hands were tingling - like when you hold a grinder for a long time. Bike seems to be running OK. Does this happen to others or is it a sign of a problem ?

The FE has a balance shaft so it should not do that. They are very smooth for what they are. If the shaft is not the problem or bearings then check for a loose engine mounting bolt ( s ). Still not found anything and everything is fine then try bar inserts, change grips.
Hope this helps.

RE: Re: Hands Tingle !!

I notice it a fair bit even when idling. I just assumed it is a big bore and a bit lumpy but the tingling didn't happen on ladst rides - maybe different conditions. I had the roller bearings checked and they were still OK. Not sure as a lot of bikes seem to blow bearings anywhere and anytime. Making me paranoid now..

I recently experienced the same problem (see subject: Rebuild now vibration). I never had any vibration before the rebuild, and then after an hours ride it started like someone turned on a switch. My hands were tingling after just a few minutes. I was ready to completely tear apart the engine. But, I got some good advise from some of the guys here, and I kinda snuck up on it instead. Checked one thing at a time. Mounting bolts, etc. I discovered that the bronze bushing the clutch basket rides on was worn. I might have missed it during the rebuild, or maybe it went after the rebuild. I'll put a new one in and see if that fixes it. I may still have to go deeper. I hope not. I guess my advice is: the best approach is to check things systematically until you find the problem, then test it. You still may have to go deep into the engine. But maybe not if you find something pretty obvious like I did. If you didn't have the vibration previously, and now you do, something has changed, and should be looked into. These bikes seem to be rough on bearings, bushings, etc. When I did my rebuild I had to replace a lot of bearings. It had approx 200 hours at that time. Good luck.

i went to 719 no fear grips and i've had a set of 909 factory gel-cel's recommended to me as being even better (read 'comfort' in the doc).

try and get a pair and we can test them for UHE together!

regards

.... my hands were tingling...?

hi,
i ride a berg and a honda cr500.
imho the major thing to do is not hold on so tightly.
this may sound simple, and possibly stupid, but it really works.
i also love the serfas grips. they dampen alot of the vibration.
you should look into the bar inserts that go into the end of the
existing bars. they work very well.
the bars that lefrog linked to are good but pretty pricey.
i know money is no issue for him, but we all arent born with a
silver spoon in our mouth.
tuts

Thanks - I am going to check clutch as it has also has been a bit tight on disengage so I would like to have a look at what is happening. I have also fitted a carbon bash plate and removed and put back on the bars and grips so a few things may have changed. New grips are definitely on the shopping list (is Santa a member here ? )

Try tiger balm, or even better horse liniment, on the shoulder blades. Not kidding. Also try not to pack your back pack too heavy. Good luck.

tiger balm - hmmm - was this remedy passed down for generations ? :) It is a noticeble vibration from the bars to the hands - I think the 600 runs a bit lumpy ? I didn't take a pack but I can see how a pack may contribute to problem if it is heavy

That happened to me when I rode all the time, but Jason made me ride a Yamaha!! Also may have to do with circulation I think as well how your sitting etc...

I have had this issue before as well. I have a few freinds that have it alsol. It seems to be more physiological than bike related. Poor circulation due to packs or previous shoulder injuries, or even age and heath in general.
It usually seems to kick in after riding pretty much non stop for 1-2 hours for me. I goes away after getting off the bike and walking around for a few minutes. It was always my left hand never the right. After I had my left shoulder repaired after years of being damaged, the tingling has seemed to diminished.

Just my 2 cents.

Excellent comments all round - THANKS !!!

I get the same tingling when using an electric sander for an extended time so it appears to be from vibration (as opposed to pins and needles if that is what you are referring to). My concern was any change to the running of the bike. I can see how all these other things that everybody has mentioned could also be a reason for it and I might need to work out what has changed or if was the type of ride we went on. Berger - I haven't aged much from from my previous ride so might not be that :) - although it seems like years pass from one ride to the next LOL.

LOL Funny Mine do that as well when using a rotary sander as I have alot time into that doing Jason's VW's (his other passion). Now Im sure its a circulation thing as that is what i was told when going to doctor about it and Im not that old either <*wink* > :)

I get the tingling and numbing sensation in my hands after riding for about 30 minutes, so bad that i usually have to slow down and take my hand/s of the bars for a minutes of so. at first, when i got back into riding, I really attributed it to my death grip on the bars, but since that time i have learned to not grip the bars so tight all the time, only when needed. I still have the issue, just not as bad, but i have been told as well that it is due to some nerve and blood flow issues in my hammered (from wrestling and football) shoulders. one of these days when i can no longer raise my arms above my head i will get them fixed. until thast time i just have to watch the throttle control, have any of you tried taming (controlling) the throttle of a 550 with a numb hand! it is so exciting.

You guys don't get arm lock by gripping so hard?
Don`t you mean arm pump? If you grip the bars to hard you will get arm pump.It can cut the blood flow in your hands and cause the tinglely feeling in the hands. Try different grips, gloves and relax your death grip and things should get better.
Hope this helps

 No it was my Swedish masseuse who passed it down...

8O I hope not too down. The ending would not be too happy!

Tiger Balm, I used it a lot after my arm fracture (see my avatar) to relieve the pain in my median nerve (the bastige shrunk a lot and hurt like a b....) and I eventually became allergic to it after a month.

I had my mom send me some niflumic acid balm (French brand is Flunir), because this thing simply does not exist in the US and it's a shame because it works like a charm, that and rubbing alcohol (again, not very popular in the US, I wonder what the US Football player use to fix their booboos).

Otherwise cold medecine is, as long as you paid your electric bill and as long as you have a freezer compartment, free and universal.
