hand guards - whats your opinion?

Hey guys/gals

For a school project I'm looking to design/redesign a set of flag (motocross) style hand guards for use off-road. My first task is to build a voice of the customer and build a list of specifications based on what the customers want. each spec will need a level of importance tied to it.

Rules:

I'll give a list of specifications that I feel describes what a hand guard should be, you can use them or add your own. Each spec will have a level importance. the importance level will be 1-5 with 5 being the highest. Each spec is worth 3 points, so if you have 5 specs you have a total 15 points you can allocate to the specs. (this way everything can't be the most important.)

Specification Level of importance

Shield Durability 4
Bracket Durability 5
shield flexibility 3
compatibility with wrap around style 1
low Weight 2
low Price 4
Impact protection 4
Aesthetics 3
space used on bars 2
controls protection 3
puddles/mud/wind protection 2

Total (11 specs x 3) = 33

Thanks this will help me out tremendously since I will be getting real world feedback from people who actually ride! Please leave any additional comments. the more the merrier!

You want us to help do your homework? Ha ha! Im not going to indulge your points system ( although very creative) but i will give you my opinion.

I know a lot of "motocross" guys wont use hand guards for fear of getting trapped in them and breaking wrists, etc but from an "enduro" point of view i wouldn't be without them! Small branches and flying rocks from riders infront, etc, can ruin your day when taken straight on the hands!

Asthetics catch the eye of the customer but function will always sell. I want the best strength and protection i can buy!

Good luck with your project.

Enduro for me.

controls protection = 5 (front brake against a tree in a high speed corner is not fun..)

Impact protection = 4 (stones hurts, so do branches and trees...)

Shield Durability = 3
Bracket Durability = 3
puddles/mud/wind protection = 3
space used on bars = 3

shield flexibility = 2
compatibility with wrap around style = 2
Aesthetics = 2

low Weight = 1
low Price = 1 (ofcourse the cheaper the better, but if function is more expensive it can be worth it)

Supermoto here.

For me handguards are all about impact/slide protection (aesthetics come in second). I'm very happy with mine on this: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/336918/Husaberg/_MG_6288.jpg

Since mounted them the bike slided once on the streets, with no damage on anything else other than the plastic itself, and dropped a few times because of my unstable bike stand, no damage what so ever!

The most important thing for me is that it doesn't even move when sliding/dropped, if that happens all is well. Cheap plastic replacements may also be fine for when they get so scratched they need to be replaced.

if a top cross rode with wrap-around handguards they'd be "in".

you can't ride without them - simple as. who said MX'ers had any sense anyway?

a single alloy strip through a plastic sheild is the lightest and best type and make sure they protect YOUR HANDS and not YOUR LEVERS like some people do!
