Halogen vs HID?

Got taken down yesterday by a roo and whilst it was a bloody good stack, the only damage is the headlight and mask. So i may as well take the opportunity to upgrade.

We have a $90 Trailtech Halogen vs a $290 Trailtech HID. Is the HID that much better??

Yup - worth it. HID is three times brighter than halogen. Plus the whiteness of the light helps give better definition. I'm told some guys don't like the extra brightness in dusty conditions, but I've never found that to be an issue.

Dodgin Roos? Damn! We just have to mind the moose and bears!

Yeah but i cannot imagine a moose jumping out of the bush at head height and taking you entirely by surprise - lol!

I don't know whether you have heard of them before, but a heap of mates just bought some of them and they swear it is the brightest thing out there for a bike. One mate has put one each side of his bars on his Berg and reckons he could go spotlighting for rabbits with them !!!!

Big plus is they only draw under 1 amp power

People get it wrong with lighting... Quite often it's the Roo that flys out from the side that you hit, not the one 500 metres down the road. So it doesn't matter how good your lights are.. Stick with Halogen

Yep seen those recently and a bunch of my ride buddies did a group buy from them. My only issue is the ad-hoc fitting, as opposed to the Trailtech straight replacement for the OEM one and it even looks like the OEM one. My buddies did a night ride recently and the one guy who bought Trailtech reckoned his was brighter than these (he would say that i know but hes a decent bloke and not one for BS).

the HID is many times better than the Halogen, if you ride at night there is only 1 choice, IMO its a no brainer

Gazza, other than Quindanning and a couple of rides at night to Wedge and back, it doesn't get used, but when it does it would be good for it to work.

You got any tricks for anto roo measures, from the Safari etc??

nope, just watch and hope.....................or send out a Kawaski first to take them all out

Piss off, WA roo's might have small brains but they've got good taste and wouldn't wanna be seen near one of them green things!

Righto then, Trailtech HID light and mask it is then.

Still not sure i got a totally straight answer on how close to the max stator output mark this will take me. I am only running a stock KTM fan kit and not this HID light. The light is 70w apparently and the fan @45w or so?? With the fuel pump and injection as well, isn;t that geting close to the mark? I always make sure the battery is 100% before any ride, but i wouldn;t wanna get caught short.

I have ran HIDs in my 640 Adventure for more than 80,000ks. I absolutely love them. I first tried a 35w set and they were great. I am now running a 55w set and they are better still. I prefer the colour the 4,500K bulbs over anything else. eg:- I had a set of 6,000K bulbs and to me they were just too white. Wouldn't mind mind trying a 75w unit in the high beam sometime in the future.

It certainly is possible to convert the standard head light on the Bergs to HID. I have just done the H4 halogen conversion to my '10 FE450, so it would be relatively easy to convert that to HID. Mounting the ballast unit will require a bit of thought and due to space constraints, it would probably be best to spend the extra $$s and get the latest 'slimline digital' ballasts. As much as I like the 55w units, I reckon the 35w (4,500K) would be more than enough for my needs. Trails, not high speed desert blasting.

I have recently purchased a set of these LED lights http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... K:MEWAX:IT
and while I haven't mounted them to my bike yet. I have hooked the up to a lead that I can run from my car's cigarette lighter. These are pretty damn good.

I have also spent a lot of time over at the Vision X Superstore (makers of the Solstice LED lights). Their Solstice Prime lights are very interesting. http://visionxsuperstore.com/led.aspx They may be a bit pricey but would definitely be worth it for the serious night rider.

Clearwater Lights also make a high quality LED light - the Krista - http://www.clearwaterlights.com/infopg_krista.html These are also dimmable.

Really wish I had the time and money to explore lighting these options better.

You are quite correct. Those units ARE a straight bolt on, no mucking about. Look damn good too!!

When it comes to improving the crappy stock lights on most bikes the are many choices and, obviously, it all depend son what your needs are and what you are prepared to spend!!

Colin the X2 is a staight bolt on job no problems.

the new Bergs have stator output of 210w, the most of any stock enduro based bike, so you have no problems running the fan + light etc

Trev and Gazza, thanks very much for your input. One of those suckers will be gracing my bike shortly!

looking to fit 2x vision x lights into the stock head light surround, 1 spot 1 spread getting brian at force to do something like what they did for the GHR dakar bike.
