greasing when remounting rear wheel

Hi
I took the rear wheel the other day to change the tire. I notice it said in the manual to grease the thread of the wheel spindle and the collar nut, but shouldn't I grease the entire spindle (i.e the part that goes through the wheel) ?

Thanks

Mati

Thanks Berger.

Any damage if I don't? I'm just curious as there was no evidence of previous grease on the spindle .

No. It just makes the axle easier to slide out when it has a light coating of grease on it.

In theory, if the bearing seals are 100% then no. If moisture gets past the seals you can get the scenario where the spindle rusts onto the inner bearing race. I had this happen once (on a road bike) and the force required to get the spindle out destroyed the bearing. A smear of waterproof grease would prevent this.
