I guess it also depends on how the engine delivers power and how you're riding of course Maybe the Gearing Commander online calculator can give an intuitive feel if you poke around in it?: Gearing Commander: Motorcycle Speed, RPM, Chain & Sprockets Calculator ... you can drop in gearbox ratios etc. and it outputs graphs and all manner of information. Then it's probably worth a check what the KTM factory supermotos use for gearboxes?
