Got a little problem, shifter wise

Well the bike ran and shifted good about 2-3 years ago. The bike had not been started since. Now the bike will not go into gear. I have had the cover off and checked, nothing seems to be wrong. I keep thinking if you get the bike running then it should shift. What would be the problem? 97 FE501.
Thanks at wits end.

the philips head screw through the middle can come loose and thats about it there.

the claw itself on the later models used to catch and bind. so look for a binding action from the claw.

but if its stopped working after all was good then you have some tough house mice out there!

Bill,
I agree with Taffy here. Look for some burring on the claw and file or sand smooth. (I've actually polished mine in the past) It must have been in nominal shape to begin with and sitting for so long maybe some residue has actually made it stick.

I did notice that with the side cover off, the claw would not hardly engage to change gear. The shifter shaft has a little in out play but that shouldn`t be the problem. No joy yet. Is there anything else that could cause this? Can take the clutch completely out and it doesn`t make any difference. Could it be in a bind and if so how would you free it?
Thanks

as said bill, you have to dislocate the claw and unhook the spring. then you buff up the corners etc. look for the plate spreading at the contact points through all the hard contact its had.
