Got a deal on some wheels

Well like the title says, I have a good deal on some supermoto wheels for my 2001 FX470E. The guy is also selling a factory lowered Husaberg suspension set up for supermoto. I had been planning on getting the wheels and the suspension, but I don't plan on racing it, and I would like a quick switch to the dirt setup. The front wheel won't fit if I don't buy the forks, but can't I just get some spacers machined or something? I'm not too familiar with this, so any info will be helpful.

What do you guys think I should do? Since I won't be racing, will the suspension really make that much of a difference?

Well I've learned a few things. I heard KTM made a spacer kit for my bike so I can run the newer 26mm axel. Is this the kit I would need to run the front wheel?

KTM's adapter kit is for using the old 20mm wheel on the newer 26mm fork mounts. Used with the old style axle, it is a set of bushings that adapts to fit the new forks.

You, I think, are trying to use a 26mm wheel in a 20mm fork. You have to have custom machined spacers made--copy the outside dimensions of the 26mm spacers, but the ID needs to be for the 20mm axle. Hope you got a really good deal on the wheels or you are best friends with a machinist.

Dave, send a PM to member Cypher. He has recently completed a wheel project similar to what you are talking about, Cypher is a good dude and should have some input for you, also your location would be helpful

Dave, if your not planning on racing i wouldn't bother with separate forks. I've set mine up primarily for offorad use and when i fit the Moto wheels i stiffen up the rear end with a few turns on the preload and wind up the compression on the forks. Its not a perfect set up but still good enough to make bigger bikes look stupid on the tight black stuff.
Also surprising how far offroad you can go as some of Cyphers photo's show.

Good luck,

Carl

Well, I haven't bought the wheels yet. He is asking $1200 for a set of Behr wheels with a 320mm brake rotor and a 6 piston caliper. I have my location in my profile, but for some reason it isn't showing under my name. I'm in North Carolina.

I don't know a machinist at all. Also, would the over sized brakes fit my forks?

He is asking $300 for the forks and rear suspension.
Oh and the rear hub is cush drive

That's not a bad deal since the disk and caliper is included. It would be even better if he included the complete brake with the correct master cylinder for that six pot caliper.

Anyway, I found a guy on KtmTalk, member name is exIT, who makes the spacers you need to to mount those wheels to your bike. If you are a member there, send him a PM and see what he charges. If your not a member over there, I can try and make contact with him for you.

It also comes with the correct master cylinder and braided lines. I'm not a member there but I'll register and send him a pm. Thanks for all the info guys. About the caliper fitting to the forks, will that be a problem?

Well I guess you will have to help me get in touch with him... can't seem to register using my gmail.com email account.

We have done two motard conversions with a smaller axle than the fork leg clamp.

I made an aluminium bush with a split down one side to fit into the fork leg clamp. You install it into the fork with the split lining up with the clamp split. This lets the bush clamp down on the axle the same way as was originally intended when the fork leg clamp is tightened, although the clamp is not quite as good as the original due to the smaller axle diameter.

With both I made new front axles up as the bearings in the new wheel were a different size to the original dirt wheels. (Yours must be too otherwise why the question?) Our axles have with a large diameter section welded onto the head end that fits into the fork leg clamp on the other side. I guess you could make split spacers for both sides and use a parallel axle, but the welded on end looks very tidy and is easy to make.

Both have worked faultlessly so far.

The caliper should be a straight forward bolt on, I use a similar set up but with a Beringer caliper and master cylinder. If for some reason it wont bolt straight on then it should just be a case of modifying the caliper hanger.

Ok so I talked to the owner of the wheels. He said he doesn't think the caliper would fit on my forks. He wanted to just sell me the wheels without the brakes when I told him I'd rather just stay with my forks, but I told him I'm only going to buy the wheels if they come with the 320mm rotor and Beringer caliper. He told me he doesn't have the relocation bracket. I should be able to buy that right and it should mount right up?
