just to let you know that sundays race saw me going through 2' of water with the water coming over my feet and more at the beginning of the race.

a few months ago i had a T-junction bored into the underside of the carb floatbowl and fed the second pipe up and around the earth wire carousel, split the end and left it there.

i also put in a yamaha WR400 engine breather and fed it down over the front sprocket (blocking the underside of the frame obviously!)

i leave the ignition cover on permanently and mastik it in place having 'vasolined' the SEM ignition unit. i also have a 6mm breather hole drilled in the underside of the case to let it breath.

the carb pipes otherwise exit below the bike in the traditional way. no problems though.

I have a good deal of experience with water crossings, and it sounds like you have made some good changes. In addition, I take all the carb vent tubes and 'T' them beside the carb body - then run a tube down and run a tube up to near the steering head, under the tank, or up high in the airbox. As long as the carb can 'see' atmosphere the bike will continue to carburate. When the normal vent tubes get submerged in water the carb no longer works properly.

The intent of the 'T's is to allow fuel to free drain while allowing air/atmospheric pressure to reach the carb. This requires a little careful use of zip ties to get everything to sit in the proper place.

I drowned my 300exc this weekend but that was due to water passing through the airfilter. The bike was still upright, though. :)

Here is me on my old CR5 in the water...

Here is Kerwin who drifted right of the preferred line and got really deep..

Ya, the problem is this section is about 200ft across and has a fast water current from my left to right and it constantly pushes the bike off line to the right. Where Kerwin is, is right on the edge of the submerged roadway - another foot to the right and it drops off another 2ft !!

You would need a CR5 to get through that water 8O

Taffy, where exactly did u drill that 6mm hole ? In the ignition cover or the case it self ?

I need to do the same I think on my SM, evertime I wash the beast it fills the ignition up will soapy sludge

in the case because when the bike is on it's sidestand THAT is the lowest point. i failed to mention that i put a split pin in the hole to keep it clear.

a lot of people ask "will it not fill up with water from the underside first?" to which i respectfully suggest (oops! starting to sound like dale  ) that water can't enter until air leaves.

water proofing

You may want to seal the wires and boot near where they exit the case, as water was sneaking in there on mine

reminds me to say that my original wiring loom tube fell apart what with all the bullying to do oil changes etc. so i fed the wires up a new tube and kinked it at the top like a "?" and zip tied it 'doubled over'. this was then mastiked in the top and around the bottom where it enters the cover and has neve r let water in.

i vaso'd the SEM ignition.

i'll never forget that ride because i have never been able to trust the WR400 and this bike either and they're the only two bikes i've had. by the end though of four hours racing all that was gone!

Taffy
