I am giving notice here now that I am going to part out my 02 FX 650. I can't keep dumping money into the frickin bike. Brand new Maxis knobbies front and rear, GPR stab, engine is good shape, needs new piston, Big Gun exhaust, kick stand (not even used), FCR carb, Renthal Fat Bars, aux tank, new brakes, to my knowledge the forks have 25 or less miles on the rebuild (cannot confirm this though).

I will make someone a smokin deal if they want to buy the bike outright. I have the engine out of the bike, top end is loosely screwed back on, cam chain has been broken (meaning the link has been opened), inside of the engine looks good, there is edge of fingernail scoring in the cylinder wall.

I was going to have the cylinder wall crosshatched and a #2 piston put in, but I can't get anyone to do the work for a reasonable price ($350 just split the cases).

If you are looking to trade for something, let me know, I might be interested.

I wanted this bike so bad, and it is nothing but a money pit for me and I can't just sinking money into the bike, I can't afford it...so I am cutting my losses.

I have sold my Concours, I have had this bike for nearly 3 months and have not been able to ride it more than 15 minutes. I have nothing to ride at all. This SUCKS!!!!!!!!

Maybe you want to sell some of the extras and finance the rebuild with that amount.

You might even want to trade some of these goodies for a rebuild.

Otherwise let us know if you intend to part out, there are some poeple hungry for parts out there (I don't want to sound like a freaking vulture but I might be interested).

Dude, I am up for parting out. I just want to ride and I don't have anything to ride right now. I mean someone with proper knowhow will have a screaming bike for the cost of a piston and gasket kit. I just can't sink another $1000 into a bike for parts and labor. I mean $375 for a piston, $150 for gasket kit, $350 for splitting the cases, then $100 to crosshatch the cylinder wall, just too much for the bike. DAMN I JUST WANT TO RIDE!!!!!!!

nah nah nah! don't do that! my cylinder wall is scored, my piston is now under the minimum but so what! it doesn't smoke it goes like hell. what else do i want? the skill is to know how long each part will last. i must also say, and you won't like this, but why throw money at goodies? they don't need a GPR stab, the original bars are excellent?

if i was in the states i'd make an offer to get it prepped up for you.

all you're saying is that for some reason you stripped the head off and found light scratching on the bore?

so!

all this stuff can be had at a good price by playing smart and talking to the right people. deals can be struck etc.

barrels come up on ebay. yes pistons do cost good money but i would stick it together and get it set up first.

jetting
gearing
suspoension

you can do it mate so come on...

Taffy, I hear ya. The bike came with all the extras, I have not purchased anything for it but the kickstand. As far as the scoring, I will have to admit that I am going on what the dealer said. I mean they are a Husaberg/Husky/KTM dealer. The tech told me that he would not ride the bike with the scoring like that. I don't know. I am not a Husaberg Tech. I do have some mechanical experience, but I have not torn a bike down. Yeah I have rebuilt a carb, I have adjusted valves, I have fixed the shifter on the VFR I had, I have replaced clutches, and I have rebuilt brakes. But this whole top end thing is just beyond me. I don't have all the necessary tools, I don't know how to break a chain link, or fix a chain link. I just don't have the experience or knowledge I need to do this job. Taffy I would buy you some good beer if you were over here to help me.

Taffy, I think the goodies were already on the bike. Who's bike was this by the way?

Some guy in Prescott had the bike, he said that he and his dad worked at some KTM/Husaberg dealer in Nevada and this was a bike that they rebuilt (ha ha ha). He was around 22-25 years old.

Seriously, I am in Flagstaff, is there anyone beside Premier that might be able to do the work. I would be willing to pay a local guy that has knowledge to do this for me. MotoXotica just sent me a PM with a good deal on a piston. I might be willing to have someone just look a the engine for a second opinion. I just don't have enough experience with this to know what I am looking at.

Bike was not smoking before the tear down. I found some very very fine metal shavings in the oil. Nothing a magnet would pick up, I was scared that something big was going on, so I started tearing the bike down. One of the techs at Premier frowned and said that he would do a top end if it were him. What the hell did I know so I waited until I had some cash stored up and then I took it down to them this past weekend. I was under the impression that $500 would take care of it, according to the tech, but I guess I was sadly mistaken.

What to do now, no I don't want part out if an affordable solution can be had, but I am not made of money. I just want to ride.

I would definitely agree with taffy sort out what you already have, there must be someone off this site in the states willing to help you or trade your fancy gear for standard and sort it out. Unless you are buying new you will not know what you are going to get and could have the same all over again with any make, Japanese or European (competition bikes = money).
A lot of bikes are for sale for a reason and not just ' not used any more, lady owner, to fast for me, never thrashed, regularly serviced by a vicar' well you get the picture, at least if you sort it you know what you got and whats been done and race manufacture limits of a throw away after one use race budget to gain 0.00005% BHP are not the same as joe public who has a normal paid job.

PS allegedly there is also fully comp and a tow rope once it is built and sort of running (only joking this kind of behavior is disgraceful and is for reference only)

i'm interested.
whats the complete price?
there are no photos on your first post.
tuts

So what is the consensus as to what a fair price for the whole bike would be? I feel that I have acurately described what I have, what do you think. I don't want to give it away, in fact I would love to get it fixed and keep it. So what do you think?

I think you need to sell me your GPR for REALLY cheap, I bet it will make you feel better.

Dude,

I feel your pain. However, after reading your report of what caused you to tear down the bike in the first place, it doesn't seem to me that your problems are all that great. I mean, the oil usually has non magnetic particles in it when you change it. Was the debris on the oil pick up screen excessive??

I'm not really clear right now about whether or not the cases are split or not? The cylinders' usually get scored b/c all the spent oil and debris hasn't been eliminated from the crank area.

Brief us all as to the exact tear down condition of the motor and let's go from there.

IMHO, based on what you have said I would keep the bike.

daleO

he has the head off it at present. i think that barrel scoring is from crap that gets past the air filter and not from underneath. just an opinion though!

and tuts has a notoriously slow computer. if there is one guy that whinges all the time about what he can't see - it's tuts. i rexkon it's those sites he keeps visiting.... a virus a day helps you work rest and play!

listen me ol flagstaff mucker! the barrel - take a picture and i'll tell you whether it's had it or not. if the barrel has hjad it then get the piston as well and if the barrel hasn't had it then the motor doesn't get split full stop.

if you have time to wait, one of our brightest and most intellectual young members is from flagstaff named bobzilla. however he has gone on a north to south cruise down your west cost that will take him munfs. he's an honest man and will help you when he's back which i think may be too long (in 2 months i reckon).

Taffy

Ok, I appreciate everyone's help, especially Taffy....and Taffy I took your advice. The spoke with the tech at the shop and he agreed with Taffy, put the F*&#$ing thing back together and ride it until it dies or blows up in your face. Since I am not racing the bike and merely riding it for much less than it was designed for, I should be fine. So all that said and done, they are putting the top end back on, tieing up the chain, adjusting the valves, new decomp cable and I am out a mere $80 for labor and valve adjust. I am picking the engine up Saturday, and will spend Saturday and Sunday putting the bike back together. I should be dead by Monday, not from the work but from riding. I am a happy camper, and I apologize for seeming like someone with a split personality. I appreicate all the help and encouragement.

taffy,
i think i caught an std from my computer....you know if you use a used mouse youre 'touching' everyone that ever used the mouse. i'm so nervous now that i wear a condom when i musturdbait.

bobzilla is in nevada, i think, berger is arizona??

i think the bike is salvageage too.
02 had single counterbalancer problems though.

I'm in with Taff and crew, and the shavings you speak of were often from chain slap inside the chain tunnel, which carved into the aluminum. This is why the shaving won't be picked up by the magnet. They had a shim kit that moved the lower sprocket out to keep wear to a minimum. Any body have any more details about this?

If you simply pulled the head to see about the shaving, then I'd rest a little, check the tunnel for wear marks, reassemble the head, shim the sprocket and then, my friend go riding.

aaaah! my mistake! but we know a member from flagstaff don't we????

you gotta watch that mouse, people are dying from just 'playing' with it!

Taffy

ok.....
i see your transparent attempts to have
all your 'friends' make like you should keep
the bike just to drive up the price.
i guess where you live thats ok.
but in my neck of the woods its not.
since you want to play these little games
i'll start the negotations low.
so my first offer is....
i'll give you $5,275.00 for it as is.
how's that tuff guy.
