Just bought a 2011 FE390 - very nice condition at 33.5 hours. Been pouring through this site as I have questions but excited and ready to ride none the less. I’m fortunate to spend most of my riding time around Salida, CO and am looking forward to this spring.

Happy trails to all of you!

Another FE390 rider in Colorado

Welcome to the forum and welcome to the wonderful world of the 70 degree engine!!! I bought a 2011 FE390 two years ago, 147 hours on her. I came off of a 2000 year model KLR250, so it was a HUGE upgrade! I live 10 miles east of Durango and ride here, a little bit near Farmington, NM, but mostly around Silverton. Last Sept. my son-in-law and I rode not the TransAmerica Trail from Trinidad, CO to Silverton - which includes riding through Salida. He has a 2010 FE390. After Salida, we rode over Marshall Pass - beautiful, easy ride and we saw 5 moose, 2 bulls near the top and a bull, cow and calf about 3 or 4 miles down the west slope. BTW, MUST BE STREET LEGAL AND PLATED TO RIDE THE TRANSAMERICA TRAIL. We put on horns and DOT tires (we like Pirelli MT21s and Pirelli MT43s, but lots of good ones out there for DOT legalizing dirt bikes).
I've had my FE390 lowered 2 inches and some suspension work done by a real professional north of Durango, George Villanyi. I already loved the bike, now it's even better - best enduro/trail bike I ever rode! More power than I need as a pretty conservative rider. MUST DO: check out the TransAmerica Trail on the internet and Youtube. You live right on it! We plan to do more. If you ever plan to be in this area, contact me (info below) and perhaps you can ride with us - usually 2 - 5 riders. (Durango and Silverton are getting HUGE snows, so both will be better AFTER Aug. 1st.) Most of us put a fuel filter sock just under the gas cap (available online and at our cycle shops) keeps the injectors clean. We also use "Engine Ice" coolant additive in the radiator as these bike tend to run on the hot side (I boiled the gasoline once - exhaust pipe runs right under the fuel tank). LOTS of stuff on the net about the 2009-2012 FEs. Keep in touch and enjoy the premium machine you now own!!! - Email: [email protected] - HusaGeezer in the mountains near Durango

HusaGeezer - Thanks for the invite to ride in your neck of the woods, I'd like to take you up on it at some point. When my son was five we took the dog, got in a '93 Jeep YJ and drove the TAT from Salida to North Carolina and back. We skipped some sections but really enjoyed it. The trip was made in late fall so saw almost no one else on the trail. Yes, the riding around Salida and for the most part, throughout Colorado is pretty spectacular. Utah is pretty wonderful as well.
