Getting comfy on my 06 fe550

Hey all, I'm 5'11" and having a hell of a time getting comfortable standing on my fe550. I feel like I am falling over the bars. I know these bergs are supposed to put your over the front, but the problem is my hands feel way too close to my knees. I tried the stock bars for awhile, then my windham bend pro tapers. I like the taller bars better, but I feel my body is still way out over my hands and I can't get balanced standing.

What to do? Taller still? Is there something to move the bars forward? How does that effect the steering?

I'm 5''8" and I feel the same on my 01 650. I've added risers but still feel very forward on the bike. I was thinking about taller bars but haven't got there yet. I get used to it once I've been on it for a while. I have no complaints with the handling though. Has anyone lowered or moved their pegs back?
 
So I have added the pegs from fastaway that lets you drop the pegs down and back slightly which helped. But then I rode my brother's new to him 2004 CRF450R that is bone stock and it feels 1000x better while standing.

What can I do to get closer to the CRF's ergos?!? I don't know what it is that makes the CRF feel better. I am currently running fastaway pegs and windham bend fatbars (also have fastaway handguard/bar mount but I don't think those add any rise).
 
hbg has foot pegs higher than e.g. ktm. It is good in deep mud grooves. I am not tall at all, but rising bars is one of few things I also plan to play with.
 
not really plug and play but .... I added 50mm extension to the steering head .. bike is 50mm longer, you need about 80mm to get the same weight distribution as the jap bikes

the tank is also too fat and this is worse when you move the wheel forward .. an omero tank helps a lot

the factory bikes had 20mm added in at the steering head

when i made a new frame I moved the front wheel 100mm further forward

raising bars also helps and hides the crappy fork valving .. it makes it harder to turn though..
 
I have these on all my bergs Rox risers there come in different heights you can really get comfortable with these
those i think are 3 inch i have 2 inch there also come in 1 inch ..i like my bars up and back a little

go get a set of SX bars or copies of. the Ex bars you have, have a sweeop back like a flat tracker. there is over an inch just there.

you may notice that only the bone on the outside bottom of the palm of your hand is touching the bars plus your index fingers.

kills two birds with one stone that!

I've got the windham bend pro tapers. I don't think they get much straighter, flatter, or higher?

EDIT: just ordered the 2" ROX risers. I think getting the bars up and forward will help greatly! I'll let you know how it works out. Then I'll look at the sweep in my bars after moving them so much.

Well @#$%. The Rox riser does not achieve the stock width and therefore my type 1 fastway handguards don't work. I think if I grind down the lip shown in the box they will be close, but I don't want to grind any further than that.

Here are my Rox risers they worked with my bark busters and now with my new twisted engineering bars and hand guards ...there were a few different ones i looked at on the site not sure now what the ones i bought are called or the type i know they were for KTM when i got mine they had a set at the KTM dealer i measured and made sure they all lined up before buying ...your top rox mounts are definitely more offset mine
i will try to find out the part number of the ones i bought and get back to you

Ya, the problem with my handguard/barmount mount is it is one piece. Yours also look wider than the stock handlebar mount bolt pattern, but because your handguard mounts aren't one piece, they can be whatever width you need.

I thought about just hacking my handguard mount in two also lol. Would be a shame, but I don't ever plan to mount a stabilizer on this thing so I guess it wouldn't matter. Just be a shame to hack it up. Here is the mounting system I am dealing with:

Version 1 and 2 are one piece and therefore cannot adjust to the width of the ROX. If I had version 3 (like most handguard mounts) it would be no problem.
 
Well your call but ...if it were my bike and i needed to have a comfortable riding position i know what i would be doing ..cut deburr smooth in that order ;)
this is how mine look when they come together ..there similar to yours how they mount to the bar ends...other than the fact your hand guards don't fit (yet) how does the riding position feel now ??

Felt great on the stand in my flip-flops! Finally didn't feel like my hands were under me.

I have new springs coming too so when it all comes off for those I will grind the lower husaberg mount. I think I will be able to make up the difference.

This thing is going to be a whole different bike next time I ride it!!
 
I got the risers in, the springs in, water pump seals/bearing replaced (I screwed everything up I could doing that but got it all back together eventually) but haven't had a chance to ride it much other than around my street.

So far standing feels great. The bars are REALLY tall! Pushing it, getting on and off, and the seated position seem a bit awkward at the moment, but DAMN standing feels great now! Need to do some real riding to see how it really feels though.

I am really tall and I had the same sensation on my old-chassis Berg that I was always going to fall over the front. Many others have said the same. I just got used to it.

Raising the bars that much WILL have a negative influence on leverage while seated and how the bike turns. You will have issues on steep climbs as well. Those are REALLY tall risers.

I understand exactly what you are trying to fix, believe me. I ran my bars in the farthest out position possible with the bar clamps and then just made do. It is a characteristic of this bike and chassis. It bothers some more than others.

Look at all the fast pro riders, tall, short, it really doesn't matter...they are run as low a bar and bar position as possible. Standing up, those guys are in the attack position, never standing straight up.

It is all a compromise, and believe me, at 6' 5" I have set up compromises to work through too. I just think your bars are going to be way too high.
 
I think you're right. These let me try a whole range of heights and forward offsets (none of which may be right I realize) so I went for it. If they made a 1" rise in this style I woulda got that instead. They make a 1" up and 1" forward block that I almost got instead. Will probably end up with something closer to that in the long run. I'm not even very tall! Just big and top heavy.

We shall see in a week! Going to Stonyford, CA which has plenty of steep, looong climbs (and descents) though nothing crazy and plenty of flowy single track so it will be a good trial run for all the changes I've made.

How does the less-leverage thing work? Honest question!

My take on this is that the stock DR-Z cockpit setup is just silly, bars are wayyyy too low and backswept - I've got about 7cm up and 5cm forward worth of risers and bars and finally I can stand on the bike. And I'm both more comfortable and go way faster offroad cause ai'm not falling over the front :)

My 570 as stock was fine though!

So there's such a thing as too low, that's for sure ...

The leverage reduction - is it because it's easier to lock your torso/arms against the handlebars when they're lower? more weight can be brought into the game?
