Gearwheel Starter/Balancer - teeth missing - 99 FE600

While repairing an oil leak from the starter o-ring I noticed 2 teeth missing on the larger cog of the Gearwheel Starter/Balancer. The larger cog is about 5cm in Diameter.

I have been quoted $350 AUD for the part and a 6 to 8 week wait. Seems very expensive and even the dealer was surprised at the price.

Has anybody had the same problem or do they now of a cost effective fix ?

I have attached the relevant part details from the manual and highlighted it.

I am going to have to work on my left hand kick action for an indefinite period :(

Look forward to any comments.

I never heard of that part failing before. You might check the mating gear on the starter to make sure it is not damaged also.

Many of the 97-2000 e-start engines have been retired and are just sitting in sheds etc. Put an ad in the classifieds of this web site and you should come up with something.

Keep your eye on ebay too!

Joe
