I've just looked at the rear sprocket size on my fs 650 to fin it's a 44t hence the mad wheelies everywhere! With no top end.

I believe 40 teeth is stand would you recommend putting it back to 40t or maybe a 42t compromise..?

I use in on the road and live in the countryside so best of both worlds would be good but you can't have everything can you..

You could try a 16 tooth in the front, it will make road driving much better, depending what kind of off road riding you do it may be ok, with a 16/42 sproket i run about 3600 rpm at 60-65 mph and was still not a problem off road in the feilds but if you ride in the woods or harsh, steep hills, slow speed terrain, you will miss the lower gears.....16/44 might be better, i was thinking a 16/45 was going to be my next step toward my happy medium, i have been running 15/42 offroad and 16/42 on road but you need two chains if you have different gearing, but its easy to change only the front sproket and chain, swapping the back one is a little more of a pain if your going switch back and forth a lot.....the higher gearing will also score you some better fuel economy and keep your front wheel on the ground a bit better... just an idea, i personally like the 16t on the front on the road and actually left it there for all of my off road riding untill two weeks ago when i took a trip to the woods, it still has plenty of pull up to speed and makes longer distance cruising at 60-80+mph almost too easy for a dirt bike....

I have a 16/45 on my FS650. Almost ideal. Had 16/40 when I bought it and changed to the 15/40 soon after. 15/40 or 16/43 is about the same gearing. It was stuck between gears too often with that setup. Either lugging in 6th or revving high in 5th. Had to be at 65 mph for the engine to be happy in top gear.

I put the 15t on with the 45 just for kicks and it would pull 6th gear from about 45mph. 65 mph seemed fine not revved out too much. I took it to 75 mph and had A few revs to spare. 15/45 would be good track gearing or around town or dirt. Just have to keep it under 65 most of the time. A bit short for my liking.

The 16/45 I have now is good. It made 6th a usable gear in town. It goes 70 easily without revving too much. When I first got the 45 tooth I thought i made a mistake. After 2-3 months now I am fairly happy with it.

Now I don't go 80-90 mph anymore. It will, but its revved up pretty high.

A 44 tooth would be perfect I think. With a 16 in front for road use and a 15 for trails or track.

Tall gearing leads to speeding tickets.

i have a 40tooth seems to be best of both pulls good monos and does about 175kmh flat out.

I prefer the 16t for the front (38-45rear depending on use) but the only hassel is its real tight getting it in and out (like easier to pull the swingarm pin to change sprockets).

Hi,

I have just got a 2007 FE 550 USA spec Which I use off road.

What is the best sprocket sizes for off road riding?

Lewis

to be exact here, I am going to switch on my FE450 from 14/48 to 14/50, because compared to bikes of my mates, my bike is like a hammer and I am always one gear lower than they are. But, on the other hand, I must say, that most of the time, my mates do not use first gear at all. On FE550 I would recommend 14/48 to keep the front wheel on earth.

I got the 14/48 going and I think it's about perfect

I kind of want to try a 14/45

It's the realy heavy steep down hillclimbs that I think are hard part
