I currently have been running a 14/48 in desert (all the time) and mountains (only go about twice a year). I am heading to the mountains and getting my bike ready and my mate said maybe i should put a 13/48 on. Might be a little better. Can some one give me there thoughts. There is some steep rocky stuff.

I ride our FE400 stock in the mountains. I don't have any problems at all. But since I am not able to check the bike right now, I can't tell you what "stock" is. I can say that we've got steep, rocky, muddy, roots, and every other combo of terrain where we ride (Oregon, USA) and with my weight the little bike does just fine. It is a little underpowered for my tastes at times, but that is why we have several in the stables. :D

I just looked up the Stock gearing and it is 13/48 on 2002 FE400E. I have only ever had a 14/48. Thats why I am hoping to hear from some guys who ride in the mountains and see what gearing they run.

I thought stock was 15X48. I run a 13X48 on my 501 with no problems. It gives me a super low 1st and I still have a good speed range (top end). If a 13X48 is still to high you might want to try a 52 on the back. Hope this helps.

Here is the stock gearing straight from the owners manual.

So do you think 13/48 will be the go ?

The 13/48 would most likely do what your looking for, But I feel with the torque of these RFS bikes you'd be better off going like 14/50 or 14/51 Your counters shaft sprocket will thank you.

what diff will the 14/50 make etc?
how is it diff then 13/48

Sorry about that faktor. I didn’t look at the posted chart. The 13/48 is the stock gearing for the 400. He's been running a bit taller gear on the front for his bike. What I meant to say, I would not go smaller than the stock sprocket on the front. If I needed more creeper power I'd go larger on the rear. Front sprockets wear so quickly on my bike.

13 tooth is as small as I would want to put on the front (anything smaller eats the swingarm slider up). I still think I would try a 52 on the back or larger. Be careful you can over rev. your engine real easy in the lower gears. Best of luck.

50 tooth

Faktor, I've put a 50 tooth on my bike, FE400e, and I like it. Slows everything down just enough and provides all the torque I need when crawling in first gear. I left the front a 13. BD

Hi guys the 13/48 worked great for my trip into the mountains. Now if only someone could give me a clue on jetting my delorto :p

i race with

14T on the front.
so i don't chew up the swingarm.

52T rear.
the largest mass produced sprocket.

this is good for everything and i only visit first now when i ride around a tree.

i think that a standard FE400e is fairly gutless so you do need very high gearing.

the 53 or LX2 cam will give you more grunt.

regards

Taffy
