Hello!

Well, I found a 2001 fs400 on Craigslist for only $150. It's missing some plastics, the seat and the muffler. It was spray painted black as well as some very pro "wiring" was done so that will have to be looked at...

I originally bought it just for the 17" wheels and forks as they would make a great swap for my drz400, but it's so light and small, it just looks too fun to part out, and it will make a badass supermoto!

The P.O. told me "the camshaft was seized" I wasn't really sure how that could happen, and after I took the valve cover off it turns out one of the cam sprocket bolts came loose and had a fun time spinning around inside the head before lodging itself between the cam chain and head. Anyways, it left a deep gouge around the head and valve cover and on the outside of only the head are a few cracks. So is the head toast? Get it welded up or would that mess with the tolerances of the cam too much? There's a head on ebay for not to much right now...


Other than that damage it looks great inside. I've only taken the head off so far, but the valves and bore look like they have very little wear. The P.O. didn't know how many hours it has, but I'm guessing not too many? Who knows...


Anyways, I guess I'm now the proud owner of a beautiful ratberg. :cool:

turn it upsode down and see if it holds a liquid like paraffin, turps, white spirit etc.

I'm surprised how many people I find local here.

The head has cracks, or the valve cover has cracks? Pictures would help. If it's a non structural location, you might be able to get away with epoxy or similar.

that's a structural component - the cam cap gets a decent amount of loading due to the valve springs (and dynamics). it also has to be precisely located.

between that, and the shavings throughout the engine from it, I wouldn't want to throw much money at it.
 
Yeah that's what I figured. The head on ebay is on its way now!

I've stripped down the rest of the motor and it all seems to be withing spec, and luckily there are very few shavings that fell down into the motor. I don't think it ran very long before the bolt got stuck.

Probably recoverable if money was tight or no replacement parts were available... but yes, this carries the cam bearing and is therefore subject to significant loads.

If it's all apart, the shavings and chips aren't an issue.

A reasonably easy rebuild and a brilliant find at the price. Nicely.

Once you've restored the FS to full operation, your DZR is going to be pig sick of sitting in the garage unused.

Yeah money is semi tight, but I still got the new head. I figured it would probably cost more than $150 to get it repaired.

And haha ya the DRZ might get a little dusty when this thing is put together...
 
yeah, unless you're good at TIG and have access to a decent machine shop, 150 is way less than you'd pay for repairs

Yup... I made the assumption you'd be repairing the head yourself. Sending it out for repair won't be cheap. If your replacement head is good, 150USD is another bargain.

Replacement head looks good, now I just have to wait for a few more goodies from taffy...
