Gasket Cylinderhead Rockerarm Cover

Hi,

by default there is liquid silicone sealing between the cylinder head and the rockerarm cover (Engines 2000-2003). I was wondering if it makes any sense to build a "real" gasket for this part, since I'm afraid that small crumbs of silicone will clog oil channels in the engine somewhere, when they drop.

A thicker gasket would influence thermal conduction between cylinder head and rockerarm cover. Since the cover is a little higher, the distance between rockerarm roller and cam lobes will slightly increase, which could change the valve timing a little bit - maybe I'm wrong in that case...

Is there reasons why one should NOT build that gasket? Could it be HARMFUL for the engine with a real gasket?

Cam bearings would need a bit of Retaining since the cover is higher

I use loctite 518 it's anerobic so the excess doesn't cure and gets washed away with oil

Hi bushmechanic,

good point - I didn't think about the bearings. Maybe it's not a good idea to build one.

When I got the engine there was a green colored liquid sealing used (like plastic). The green stuff was kind of crumbeling apart and could be found inside the engine... That's why the idea with the gasket came up.

Are you happy with Loctite 518? I was actually looking for something silicone based like Loctite SI 5990 or Elring Dirko black, since both promise to be "stable" up to 300°C... but it's a pain in the *** to get it off again.

The one I use is Loctite 515. It has same characteristics as 518 I believe. It only dries at the absence of oxygen so has an indefinite work time.
Never a problem with it.

If the 2 surfaces are not flat you need a gernerous amount. Then make sure to put the same amount on top of the bearings

Volvo has a great sealant used on the OHV valve covers, might be something to look into?
It just might be made by Loctite who knows, but it is a sealant and bonding agent that is not silicon based. It becomes a nice clean sealing agent that is removable. If I remember correctly it is Pink.

Long story short - I ended up with Hylomar - at least for a test
