If you change the back pressure significantly you might want to look into a re-map of the computer. It’s likely though, you won’t notice any significant difference. The map switch provides 7 additional map setting you can program into the computer. The USA (and perhaps other) 2010’s have a very lean mapping to pass the California green sticker. If you have this in NZ too, get your dealer to reflash your bike with the “Competition map” a.k.a. the 2009 mapping.
I came off a Yamaha WR 450 with a really loud DrD exhaust system on it. Initially I loved it. Really throaty thump and rumble with a deep loud bark when I opened it up. BUT... I started reading a bit on the subject of noise. They 1st things I read were about how the noise was the biggest complaint and subsequently the most prolific reason cited in the loss of riding sites. Later I started reading about noise fatigue and how it affects the average person in the performance of any given task. It’s actually a fairly serious energy drain on your brain. In a race last yr I spent 5hrs and 44mins listening to that loud pipe. I was really tired at the end of that. It was a tough course but the bike was just too darn loud.
My FE 570 is pretty quiet unless you start to flog on it. The intake noise is much more prevalent than the factory exhaust but the thing I know for sure is the map setting #2 will pull your arms off so I don’t think lack of power is the problem. I think the FX can is different and therefore doesn’t have the same dB-killing bent pipe section at the rear of the can. You can see the description and schematic on-line.
If you still want to get a different can I think the Akro pipe is properly engineered and dyno tested. You might pick up a couple HP and perhaps have a sound that suits you a little better and drop a bit of weight but... How much $$$ are you willing to pay for a different sound and few extra ponies that may not make any difference?
As for me, I’m trying not to piss off the general public and trying to get used to the sound of that intake growl.
