Fuel that is only RON 92

Hi All,

I am going for a 170klm ride and I can only get regular unleaded fuel (RON 92) at about 100klms!

Can I use this (book says minimum 95) or would that be bad?

Cheers,

Mal.

IMHO it won't be that bad.
I use 95+ when I can but alot of the time only 91 is available at some places so I'm forced to use it.
Difference isn't noticeable and it doesn't ping or anything like that, on my bike anyway.
Having said that I'm not racing it either, just social stuff.

do you hear it pinging?
I wouldnt have thought you would hear it on a berg, do you check the plug for signs of detonation? I would seriosly not trust anything but premium (98 octane) from a good servo.
I had a gsxr600 that pinged so bad one time that i thought something was wrong but it was just bad fuel (premium)
I wouldnt be able to heat detonation on my bike now.

Well like I said sometimes you just can't get 95 let alone 98.
Bit impractical to carry 10 ltr fuel for 100km.
When your choices are 91 or diesel I find the 91 works best. :D
I haven't heard, seen or felt any evidence of problems.

Thanks Coastie, good to know it has been done and it didn't leave you broke down on the side of the road. I am surprised more people didn't have an opinion on this.

Side question, I have a new FE450E (07) with only 7.2 hours and 270 klm's on it and I have not kept track of how much fuel I have put in so have no idea on mileage. Any ideas I how far a 10 litre may get me on a medium paced fire trail ride? Still running the bike in a bit so no holding full throttle for long.

Cheers,

Mal

Hi Mal
I'm on a 650 and as a rule I get a safe 100km with a mix of fire trails and single track. I have gone 120 before but was worried..... very worried.
Mate rides a Husky 510 and gets a safe 120 - I know this because he constantly bags me about it.
A lot of factors come into it but I reckon the 120 mark would be a safe starting point.

If you are really worried about it why don't you just buy a small bottle of octane booster, read the directions for use, and carry the few ounces it will take for your fill up. Some of the plastic bottles are graduated on the side.

If you use a container other than the original to carry the small amount make sure that it's metal. Although most octane boosters come in plastic (some still come in metal cans) bottles, they have a special lining inside to prevent leakage of vapors through the plastic.

AS far as mileage goes, I have an 04 550 and full off road riding I can get about 65-70 miles on 2.4 gallons. On hard pack dirt roads, and taking it easy, I went 78 miles on 1.5 gallons. Just depends on how much loose dirt, and at what speeds you are riding.

Thanks for the info, I will do my sums on getting more fuel no later than 100klms to play it safe. With the newness of the bike and myself (back into dirt bikes after 25 years) it will be a reasonably low rev trip.

I will check out that octane booster, it sounds interesting.

Next time I go for a local ride I think I will throw in some RON92 to confirm what Coastie has found before going bush.

Cheers,

Mal
