Hi guy! i just want some addvise on whats the best oils to use for the motor and what gearing you guy's recomend running for road and fun use? not track racing just bruning up around town!

RE: FS650E OIL

Hi Rob, oil wise its really down to personal preference and what you can get hold of easily, i have used motorex (expensive) and castrol.
I use 15/42 gearing for my supermoto wheels, this makes the bike great fun in the lower gears and a top speed approaching 90mph.

Hope this helps, Carl

RE: FS650E OIL

I use Motul 300V 15w50. I like bike geared a little higher to keep it in the fat part of the torque curve. I have run several combos but 15/38 or 16/40 are my favorite. Lots of top end too -- 125 MPH!

Hey Rob, where abouts are you from ?
Im in england and got my oil from Dave Clarkes. Its Motul 300v 5w40
just thought id let you know but as above, its down to what brand you trust/prefer. I believe the ambient temperature has an effect on what grade to use so bear this in mind.

RE: FS650E OIL

oh and re: gearing my preference is 15 or 16 front and a 42 rear. i ride on british roads and feel this is a good setting but i havent experimented much. i personally wouldnt want more accel than 15/42 though

what sprockets do you have fitted at the moment ?

I use old frying oil the missus empties from the chip pan, you have to sieve out the black bits but it doesn't take long, have to change the oil every 4 minutes though. Gearing is 29 on the front and 8 on the back, does 137 in 1st gear, bit tough on the clutch though. By the time I've got flat out in 1st I need to change the oil, we have chips every night so no shortage of old fat.

Seriously, same as the others on the oil Motul 300v, used it for years on all my bikes with no serious probs. Gearing 16 and 38, good fast road gearing, makes 6th tall but good for fast cruising with the bigger bikes, still pulls lower gears like a train.

Freaky maybe i should take a leaf out of your book and drop my acceleration somewhat, ive obviously been hurting her with this crazy a22ed low gearing ive got ....

If you ride with a Adler slipper clutch I wouldn't recomend Motul. Hade some major problem with that combo last year.

sorry for the late reply but i got a 16 on the front and a 38 on the bak?
Wha you think?

RE: Re: RE: FS650E OIL

My advice would definately be to buy a 15 front first ! Its far cheaper and much easier to change. Thats what i did when i got mine. It already had a 42 on the rear and it had a 16 on the front. Im not too bothered about going over a ton but knew with 16/42 it sat very comfortably at 70-80mph for the mway and topped out over 105. so i dropped to a 15 on the front and still feels reasonable at 70mph, will top out probably (not tested) at just over 100 but the acceleration difference is just something else !!
if you dont like it you can put your 16 front sprocket back on and when you change your chain/sprockets just buy a new chain and a rear sprocket with a few less teeth.
If you do like it and you want to try further, you could buy a 40 rear or even a 42 at the next chain/sprocket change

Thanks for that advise

Barret, could You be more precise, what problems did You have with motul 300v and adler slipper?
I just went this way Adler + 15w50 300v and my clutch after few minutes of riding does not work properly.
It is taking all the time so that i have to hold the bike with brake. And second thing clutch lever falls down.

**five year old thread..

I use Rotella T as well, it's a good oil that has the "JASO MA" rating.

I change it after every ride on my FS, or every 5-8 hours. It costs $3.79 to change it. Filter every third or fourth change.

*edit... The reason I change it so often is my bike has A LOT of hours on it, and 5 hour oil changes let's me know of any issues ASAP. (in theory)

A lot = 400 hours

15/42 = 16/45 which is what I've been running for a while.

Went to 17/47 which is effectively down one in the back, and it just cracks a ton.

17 tooth is an AFAM, and it's on their site, I don't have it handy.

I know it is 5 year old thread, but didn't want to open new one.

I have changed the oil today - castrol 10w50 and clutch is still pulling while standing and lever still falls in after 10 minutes of riding.
