Fs650 starter repair using japan honda parts
FS650 as many husabergs uses Mitsuba SM14 electric starter.
KTM doesn't sell parts for this starter and you have to buy a new one at price between 150-350 euros.
It is a very common electric starter, here are some models that use it with some differences at the outer shell:
CBR600F4/F4i 99-05
CBR600RR 03-05
CBR929RR 00-03
EX250F NINJA 250R
ZX1000C NINJA ZX-10R 04-05
GSX-R650 01-04
SV650 99-02
GSX-R750 96-04
VZ800 MARAUDER 04
YZF-R6 600 99-04
I found thar Honda sells separate brushes for cbr 600rr 03-05 for a total of 25 euros at my local dealer.
They are made in japan! Husaberg mitsuba starters are made in italy.
You need two parts:
31206-MBE-008 Brush Holder Set Honda CB-CBF-CBR
31201-MBE-008 (positive)
Open the starter and you'll find the plate with the brushes in the part on the right of the photo.
remove the nut at the side of the starter and then remove the plate with the brushes
At the left the old husaberg plate.
At the right the Honda one.As you see,it has a shorter copper cable but it's okay.
You have to press the spring to install the positive brush on the plate.
take some care to install correctly plastic and rubber pieces on the silver bolt for not having short cirquit. There must be no contact between that bolt(positive pole) and the body of the starter(ground)!
You can test the starter before having it back to the engine, just hold it tight because it is very powerful.
This video may helps, the starter is the same Mitsuba SM14.
