FS 650 E 2006 AU/NZ Exhaust Mod

Hi Guys,

I've tried finding the answer to this question on this forum, but not had any luck with this specifically; so hope someone can help me?

I've just replaced the packing in my can and noticed the design of the AU cans is different from the US and EU cans? Even the later model FS 650's have a different design to the '06.

On my FS 650 E '06 AU/NZ model can, there is a long pipe that extends from the end pipe cap into the rear chamber towards the mid chamber. It seems to pretty much sit hard up against the mid chamber, beneath the pipe outlet coming in from the exhaust.

My question is can I shorten this length of pipe a few inches to help the bike breath a bit more? It seems very restrictive? (picture attached with the place I thinking to cut?)

If I do shorten it by only a little, can anyone advise if they have done this, and does it lead to jetting issues?

Thanks in advance!

Cheers! RJ

Hi RVJ yes you can do that

or put a bit of perforated pipe in there

check these threads, most of the pictures are not showing up becasue the gallery still isn't working. I have a pic of mine I will upload shortly

good gain in response/power not too loud

better bottom end than a slip on akra, similar top end (08 628 engine)

Thanks BushMechanic - really appreciate the quick and detailed reply!

I think I'll go with the second option you listed; the drilled out pipe. Hopefully this wont' be too much a change in performance, and I won't need to adjust the carb.

I'll get onto this now and post the results...

Thanks again!

RJ

Hey Crew, Just been out for my first ride since I bought the bike, and rebuilt it. Based on the info provided by Bushmechanic, I cut off 3cm from the inner pipe (the asymmetrical bit) and this has helped immensely; the bike feels free and has a subtle but awesome pop on decel. Love it. Can't take the grin off my face. Cheers.

I havnt done many post on here...

Could i ask... RV

when open it up alittle as mention above ^
does its pop's or little back fire at all? eg going down throu gears
or jetting need to be change "I havn't touch or known my jetting just yet, was told has been change by previsve owner"

Later down the track I'll be replacing hole exhaust system, anyway different story.

I change my rapter 700 & flame arrester.... does pop fr time to time (but its a different bike anyway... but love the sound plus free up the pressure thou
And my old "tank" xr 600 never did .... took restricter right out...

RVJ did you adjust your carb?

ive done the same modification too ive left it with the 190 main jet.. (dellorto carb)

Hey, Nope. No carb adjustments.

Just to clarify; I stripped the silencer, replaced the exhaust chamber with new packing, (4T from local bike store, single wrap cut to size at home with scissors), then left mid pipe untouched. No re-pack in the end chamber. Cut the end pipe by 3cm (just the "squashed" bit) . Rivet everything back up. Done... No changes to carb. doesn't "feel" lean. Just feels lighter and has a subtle "pop" on decel. Sounds really healthy. No plans to re-jet at this stage. Cheers!

I have cut the pipe in the cap almost flat with inner edge of the cap, sounds beefier now, did not ride it yet so no idea if it changed anything apart from sound. :))

Sorry.... been digging up old bones....

took me amonth get this far because of my work away fr home... plus been praticing my staniless weld, never done before

My first mod..... woohoo... yeeha I know *eye rolls for some* lol

(before I start drilling holes,
I didn't want pull it apart again later to finish the job or if no good?, me do it once & be done wif)

Ok A Quick question...... Does or doesn't drilling Lots of holes makes any quieter or change the sound?
any different?
no different? Then I'll just put it together....

Heaps? if so then I'll have to chase up bench drill press... (needed one for me self anyway)
much appericate on oppion
