fs 650 bent valve (possibly)

hi everyone

my name is paul and i'm new on here, just registered, but been using this brilliant site for a week or two for some very useful information.

iv'e just bought my second berg a 2002 fs650, i had a 2003 fs650 about 2 years ago and never had a problem with it then sold it and bought a r1, and regretted it ever since. so bought another one.

but this 2002 i've bought is driving me insane i've had the bike about 3 weeks and have had it running for 2 minutes, i've put a newly rewind stator on from motoplat (sparks a very helpful guy), i've set the valves 1/8 turn, and the decomp as the manual says but still wont start, and i've been in the garage down to my undies kicking the crap out of it, there is no estart just kick :(

i took the cam cover off today to see if there was any physical damage i could see but there is'nt, but when i've tried to turn the engine with the kick start i here a hissing sound on compression stroke, all the valves are closed as there is no rockers to operate the valves, i put all my weight on the kick start and it hisses like there is air escaping from one of the valves then it turns on the down stroke and then becomes stiff and hisses again on the up stroke.

is this normal to have a little leak of air on the valves or should they be air tight so i shouldn't be able to turn the engine at all when all valves are shut. i'm thinking bent valve but don't want to take the head off if it is normal. or have i missed something else, i've set the mixture screw on the carb 2 turns out and had a play with the idle screw but is back in original position.

any help would be gratefully received

cheers paul

Hi Paul

I Welcome you to UHF

If your valves are hissing air while closed, I suggest you remove the head and check the valves for leak and condition.

Are you sure its the valves letting air out, it could just be air being forced around the piston down to the crankcase.?

When you assemble the it again, make sure your camshaft is in correct alignment when in true TDC position. Makes hell of a difference.

I hope this helps.
Best regards

Thanks Thor

sorry about not getting back sooner, i've been in garage and stripped the engine down completely replaced all gaskets, orings, piston rings and reseated the valves, also it's easier to set the clearences and timing with engine out, so hopefully it should start, if not it can only be the carb or the cdi unit.

cheers paul

i would go to the 1/6th turn and not the 1/8th. i think you had the tappets too tight and the auto decomp may even had somewthing to do with it.

you haven't got the best year there mate. get rid of the alloy camwheel, get a new modern chain and tensiner blade, rip the alloy head off the tensioner, new cam bearings and follower bearings, check for scoring in the cam flanks etc.

i'd be careful to check the gearchange selector plate, modify the kickstart to the Taffcrescentmod.

if you've got a spark and fuel it should start. don't forget a new plug. i swear by the IXU24 from nippondenso even though i'd never had their stuff before.....

regards

Taffy
