Front Shocks: MX or Enduro?

Got another one for ya'll.

My front forks blew out seals in August (now my front brake doesn't work from the oil!!!).

The current tripleclamp diameters are 54mm upper, 54mm lower.

I bought a set of new shocks last summer, but... The lower tripleclamp diameter would be 57mm, and 54mm on the upper.

Does this indicate that the new (57mm lower) is an MX shock? And my old is and Enduro shock?

The 54mm lower shocks are stock from 91, as far as I know. The ones I bought, I was told, were from approx. a '96 bike.

I am currently trying to locate a 57mm lower shock. No clue on offset requirements. Would they change too?

Any thoughts???

Hi,

WP changed the diameters in 93, I think.
In early KTM models it was the same situation.
An old bike from a friend of mine (92 KTM 600)
had in the lower tripleclamp a diameter of 57
but the outer tube diameter was only 54mm.
So KTM used slitted bushings.

Maybe it´s possible to turn out your lower tripleclamp with a lathe.
Or you try to get one from a model 93-97. Maybe on Ebay?.
You can also try to get a KTM one, but then you have to change the fork stem.

Yeah, I looked into that, but there isn't enough meat around the clamp to machine out. Though, I am happy that there is hope, and that they changed the triples shortly after my bike was made. Thanks for the info. I'll keep looking.

But still, is there a visible difference between the MX or the enduros? Or is it just the guts that are different?

Hi,

normally the outer appearance of the fork is
the same. It doesn´t matter if it´s MX or enduro.
Only the "innards" are different. The set-up and the spring rate differ
from MX to enduro. That´s all.

Good luck while searching, and have fun with your oldtimer
