Front shock absorber question

Hi guys!

Quick question: can the bottom part of the front shock absorber be removed? Im talking about the part which holds the wheel shaft in place?

Cheers, Tom

The thing is I have two bikes, a 2002 and 2003 650 and the shaft diameters dont match. The problem is that the bike I use for offroad has harder shocks even on the softest setting then the SM bike so I want to change the shocks between them. I don't see how else this is possible whit the ends of the shocks not being the same size.

Cheers, Tom

there used to be adapters available. don't know if they still exist, though

You mean the wheel axle shaft diameter is different, or the fork tube diameter?

Yes, the fork ends can be removed and swapped for typical WP forks, assuming same diameter. It involves heat, and proper holding clamps for the fork tubes. Typically, this is a swap for the pros, not DIY.

It's possible. I haven't done it but it's in my book "motorcycle suspension bible" by race tech. I would never do it without proper clamps.

huh?
i know i'm out of touch, but first i've heard of it.
The inner fork tube is screwed to the fork ends and locked with Loctite.
(fork ends are threaded)

I am talking about the axle shaft diameter being different. Swapping the clamps which hold the shaft in place would solve my problems.

A simple mechanical solution is to have both wheels rebuilt and swap the hubs in the process (i assume the hubs are both dirt style hubs)

The other option is to swap the fork lowers/tubes, assuming they're both the same like 43mm open cartridge forks. This does not change your valving on the forks.

Yes they are both the same, everything is the same except the wheel shaft diameter. How do I change the fork tubes?

There are a couple good fork how to videos on you tube from rocky mountain atv. With some fork oil, and some hand tools, you should be able to disassemble, change oil, and swap.

the normal way to do this is to revalve the one you want to change, and possibly change the spring. if none of this is making sense, see somebody who does suspensions and let them do it.
