Front & Rear Sprockets - How Many Teeth... ?

Apologies if this topic's been covered many times before, but can someone point me in the right direction?

I intend to use my '04 501 for road use only, mainly A & B roads and am looking for a set-up that affords rapid acceleration and power, without too much emphasis on top speed... 80'ish mph being about all I'd imagine ever hitting on the twisty tarmac around where I live.

What front and rear combo's would be best for this?

I personally would go for something between a 15/46 to 15/50. I havent ridden a 501 but I use these gearing set ups on a few bikes now and has been great. i had a 1999 WR 400 with a 15/46 found it to be very good on highway cruising 100kph+. 15/50 good for round town and some highway use although still maxed out at 160kph (100mph). 2008 Ktm 530 with 15/50 and was very nice cruising at 120kph (75mph) with no real power loss but it was a 6 speed, 15/46 was to fast on the ktm. FE570 now has 14/52 and I love it havent had it topped out on road yet but it gets to 140kph pretty quick and still has more. Hope this helps a little.

FWIW,

I run a 16/52 (3.25:1) on my 501 in the desert. I would imagine this would serve you well on the street, assuming you are running an 18" rear wheel.

If you feel it's too high just drop to a 15 in the front (3.46:1) and that will make the bike a lot quicker. By running these larger chain wheels it really helps keep the chain off the swing arm, and dramatically improves chain and sprocket life.

If its supermoto you probably want higher speed gearing.

I think my bike stock was 15/38, I would cruise around town in 4th gear. When I put a 40 on the rear I cruise around in 5th now. 5th gear goes 80km/h perfectly with 40 on the rear, and the bike runs 100km/h - 120km/h a little easier. On the back straight on the local track I hit 182km/h when drafting a sport bike that was fun. I think I like the 38 better because its seems to let the bike with less revs but it lugs more when going the speed limit.

After some testing, I decided to opt for a 17" wheel set-up and 14 / 45 gearing.

The 501's down on BHP and torque in comparison with the bigger bore bikes (and EFI newbies), so I'm hoping this provides a decent compromise between acceleration and top-end.

All's I need now is some decent weather, but being UK'side I'm not holding out much hope of that!
