Front fork lowering gadget?

A while back I did my first Supermoto race. I was on the grid and a couple of the riders signalled to the starter that they needed him to do something. He came over and seemed to push a button or something on the front forks as the rider pushed down on the front end.
What were they doing? I forgot to look at the bikes after, but I'm assuming it was some sort of lowering gadget? I'm watching AMA Supermoto on TV right now and I think I just saw a rider reach over the front and do this to his forks as he was approaching the grid. Is it just for launching? Do the forks need to be disassembled to install it? What's this all about? My 'berg could use lowering, so I'm very curious.

Hi VW,
I think what you saw may have been a launch or holeshot control device used just for the start of a race. Here's some info:

A hole shot device is a great addition to any motocross racer. It can help reduce wheelying off of the start, letting you concentrate on your awesome holeshot!

It works by keeping the forks compressed down, then releasing them easily and automatically along the start straight.

Hole shot devices are used by many top pros (ever seen them compressing their forks on the start gate, now you know why).
